LISLE, Ill. -- The Butler University men and Youngstown State University women sit atop their respective standings after day one of the 2009 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Day two at Benedictine University is set for Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.
On the men's side, Butler (20 points) paces Youngstown State (19), the University of Illinois at Chicago (8), Loyola University Chicago (6), the University of Detroit Mercy (6) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (3).
On the women's side, Youngstown State (21) leads Milwaukee (20), Detroit (12), UIC (8) and Loyola (1).
Four events were completed during a series of light rain showers on Friday.
Butler junior Justin Roeder (30:56.12) and Milwaukee senior Holly Nearman (36:01.32) picked up individual titles in the 5,000 meter, while Youngstown State senior Joe Lahmon (58.62 meters) and Detroit senior Brittany Horne (51.11 meters) notched individual crowns in the hammer throw.
Lahmon's toss is an NCAA Regional Qualifying mark and tops his previous Horizon League season best.
Half of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon also took place on Friday.
UIC senior Mike Savegnago paces the men's competition through five events with 3,324 points, while Youngstown State senior Yandeh Joh leads the women's competition through four events with 2,756 points.
