Male Athlete of the Week

 

Nick Gretz

UW-Milwaukee

Sr., Two Rivers, Wis.

Gretz broke school records in the discus and shot put on the second day of the Big Blue Classic, posting distances that put him second in the region in each event. His discus throw of 181'3" easily broke Jon Manke's record of 172'10" and won the event. He also won the shot put with a throw of 57'9.5", breaking his own school record of 57'1" set a week ago. Meanwhile, the Panthers took third at the meet.

 

Female Athlete of the Week

 

Bethany Anderson

Youngstown State

Jr., Jamestown, N.Y.

Anderson broke the school record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the hammer at the Duke Invitational. Anderson is the first female thrower in school history to hit the automatic qualifying mark. Her distance of 178'6" was the top among collegiate athletes at the meet and broke her old school record by more than three feet.

Terell Williams

UIC

Jr., Rock Island, Ill.

Williams opened the outdoor campaign for UIC by placing second in the decathlon at the Chicagoland Championships in Naperville, Ill., April 5-7. Williams finished with a point total of 6,033. The junior also notched top 10 finishes at the Chicagoland Championships by placing eighth in both the pole vault (4.28m) and javelin (46.12m).

 

Shayne York

Youngstown State

So., Whitehouse, Ohio

Shayne York placed ninth in the long jump and 11th in the triple jump at the Duke Invitational. York's mark of 22'3.5" was a personal-best and ranks him sixth in school history.

 

Erik Hernandez

Loyola

So., West Chicago, Ill.

Hernandez registered a 51'10" mark to place first in the shot put to lead Loyola at the Chicagoland Championships on Saturday at North Central College. The West Chicago, Ill., native was the only competitor in the shot put to have a mark over 50 feet and followed up with a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw at 154'2".

Kristen McMurray

UIC

Fr., Lisle, Ill.

McMurray made her outdoor debut for UIC a memorable one, recording a trio of top-10 finishes for the women's team at the Chicagoland Championships, April 5-7. McMurray, a throws specialist, placed fifth in the shot put (11.59m), sixth in the discus (35.02m) and eighth in the hammer throw (38.14m) at the event.

 

Amber Curtis

UW-Milwaukee

Jr., Bonduel, Wis.

Curtis broke her own school records in both the hammer throw and discus last weekend at the Big Blue Classic. She tossed 164'5" to win the discus and surpass her mark of 158'2" set two weeks ago. In the hammer, Curtis took fourth with a throw of 140'4", eclipsing the previous mark she had set at that same meet with a throw of 139'11". Meanwhile, the Panthers took third at the meet.

 

Briana Kennett

Loyola

Sr., Bismarck, Ill.

Kennett had a solid weekend for Loyola in the throws. Kennett was in three events and the Bismarck, Ill. native responded by registering a pair of top-10 finishes, coming in eighth in both the discus (113'3") and javelin (96'6") as well as 14th in the hammer throw (108'11").
