Male Athlete of the Week

 

Nick Gretz

UW-Milwaukee

Sr., Two Rivers, Wis.

Gretz was the second collegiate finisher at the prestigious Kansas Relays last weekend in two events. In the discus throw Saturday, he placed third overall with a throw of 174-5. Friday, he was sixth overall in the shot put with a toss of 56-7 1/2.

 

Female Athlete of the Week

 

Holly Nearman

UW-Milwaukee

So., Monroe, Wis.

Nearman won the 5000m at the prestigious Kansas Relays over the weekend. She ran a personal-best time 17:31.43 in winning the event. Her time is fifth-best in school history.

 

Other Men's Top Performers for the Week

 

Joseph Mbari

UIC

Jr., Kenya

Mbari gave the UIC track and field team its lone event title at the Iowa Musco Invitational on Saturday, winning the 3,000-meter race with a time of 8:34.54.

 

Dominic DeFilippo

Youngstown State

So., Lisbon, Ohio

DeFilippo finished 15th in the hammer and 16th in the shot put at the All-Ohio Championships. His mark in the hammer (148'7") ranks him fourth on YSU's all-time list.

 

Erik Hernandez

Loyola

So., West Chicago, Ill.

Hernandez had a pair of record-setting performances in field events on Saturday at the Eagle Invitational. The West Chicago, Ill., native was the runner-up in the shot put with a 54-04 mark while placing fourth in the hammer throw (157-08) and now ranks second on the school's all-time list in both events.

Idara Essien

UIC

Jr., Wheaton, Ill.

Essien posted a season-best distance in the triple jump at the Iowa Musco Invitational on Saturday, leaping 11.40m for a fourth place finish in the event. That mark was the third-longest distance posted in the Horizon League this year. Essien also placed 12th in the long jump with a mark of 5.10m at the event.

 

Bethany Anderson

Youngstown State

Jr., Jamestown, N.Y.

Anderson shattered her school record in the hammer at the All-Ohio Championships, posting a third-place mark of 187'1" to top her previous record by more than nine feet. The distance also ranks her 12th in the Mideast Region and 40th nationally among Division I throwers. She holds the top mark in the Horizon League this season by more than 16 feet.

 

Pam Staton

Loyola

So., Ingleside, Ill.

Staton's personal-best 2:15.48 performance in the 800-meter dash won the event at Saturday's Eagle Invitational by 6.08 seconds.

 

Tiffany Brigham

Wright State

Fr., Springfield, Ohio

Brigham finished eighth in the 200 meter dash at the All-Ohio Championships.  She set a new school record in the 100 meter dash (:12.30) and was part of the 4x100 meter relay team that placed ninth.
