Pair of Soccer Players Earn U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee senior Zeke Dombrowski (men's soccer) and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay senior Lotte Rasmussen (women's soccer) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Oct. 9).


Dombrowski scored the game-winner in Milwaukee's 1-0 victory over Wright State on Sunday (Oct. 7). He also netted a goal in the Panthers 3-0 win over Butler, and currently, he leads the team in goals, points, minutes played and shots taken.


As a business major, Dombrowski carries a 3.591 grade-point average. He has also been named to the Horizon League Honor Roll.


Rasmussen scored two goals in Green Bay's victory over Youngstown State on Friday (Oct. 5), one of which was a header in the fifth minute of the game. Rasmussen led the team in points and shots on goal last week, and leads the Phoenix in scoring on the year.


Academically, Rasmussen earns a 3.941 grade-point average as a psychology major. She has earned recognition on the All-League Academic team, as well as the League Academic Honor Roll. She was a 2006 NSCAA Honorable Mention for All-Region Scholar, and aided Green Bay in earning back-to-back NSCAA team academic awards.


The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.


OTHER MALE NOMINEES:

Abe Mulvihill, Butler (golf, senior, 3.291, finance) finished second for the Bulldogs at the Butler Fall Invitational with a 54-hole score of +7 (220). Overall, Mulvihill tied for 11th, missing the top ten by one stroke. He shot his best two rounds of the fall season with back-to-back 73s in the first and second rounds.

Malcolm DeBaun, Loyola (soccer, sophomore, 3.96, biology) played a vital role in a Loyola defense that did not yield a goal in a pair of Horizon League matches last week, as it shut out Cleveland State 2-0 on Sunday (Oct. 7), and tied with Detroit in a scoreless match on Friday (Oct. 5).

OTHER FEMALE NOMINEES:

Michelle DeGeeter, Butler (volleyball, senior, 3.424, pharmacy) led the Bulldogs with 4.08 kills per game, adding 2.77 digs per game and 1.15 blocks per game. She registered her seventh and eighth double-doubles of the year against UIC and Loyola, totaling 20 kills. Against Wright State, she added a team-best 13 kills.

Kayla Lefeld, Cleveland State (volleyball, sophomore, 3.81, graphic design & art education) helped CSU to a perfect 3-0 week as she averaged 3.81 kills per game and hit .380 in wins at Valparaiso and at home against UIC and Loyola. In a 3-1 victory over Valpo, Lefeld came off of the bench to finish with 11 kills and just one error in 18 attempts, while against UIC on Friday (Oct. 5), Lefeld earned a career-best 22 kills, hitting .386 with just five errors in 44 attempts.

Cynthia Morote-Ariza, Loyola (soccer, sophomore, 3.40, clinical psychology) recorded Loyola's first hat-trick since 2004, in a 3-0 victory over Cleveland State. She also scored the game-winning goal in a double-overtime victory over Illinois State, the ninth of her career, tying her own single-season school record. She upped her career point totals to 18 goals and 51 points in less than two full seasons.

Leanne Felsing, Milwaukee (volleyball, senior, 3.479, education) led Milwaukee to two league victories as she tallied triple-doubles in both matches, giving her a school-record 10 for the season and 17 for her career. She now ranks in UWM's top 10 all-time for kills, digs, and aces.

Brittany Malicoat, Valparaiso (volleyball, junior, 3.38, art history & public relations) registered 116 digs over four matches last week, averaging 6.82 digs per game. She surpassed her career high with 39 digs on Wednesday (Oct. 3) against Youngstown State, which is the second-most digs in a match in school history. She moved from 10th to sixth on Valpo's career digs chart last week with 1,369, just 26 away from the top-five.
