INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Detroit Mercy senior Mary Parker (women's soccer) and Cleveland State University junior Tom Sadd (men's soccer) have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Oct. 3).

Parker scored four goals and added an assist in Detroit's victory over Cleveland State on Friday (Sept. 29), giving the Titans their first League triumph of the season. In the process, she moved into fourth place on the school's all-time list for goals (36) and points (87) in a career. Those totals also lead all active players in the League and put her in position to become only the 11th player in loop history to reach the 100-point plateau.

In the classroom, Parker owns a 3.793 grade-point average as a biology/pre-med major. She is a two-time Academic All-District selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and a four-time member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll. The three-time First-Team All-League performer plans to enroll in medical school next fall.

Sadd helped anchor the Viking defense which posted a 1-0, overtime shutout at Butler University on Saturday (Sept. 30). That victory was CSU's first in League play since 2003, helping continue the team's resurgence as Cleveland State (now 4-6-1 overall) re-builds following an 0-17-1 campaign last year. CSU already has three shutouts in 2006, the most by a Viking squad since 1997, and has allowed only 15 goals in 11 contests after yielding 65 last fall.

The starting defender carreis a team-best 3.83 grade-point average as a mechanical engineering major. He earned a spot on the Academic All-Horizon League Team in 2005, and was a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll in both semesters last year.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
