Pete Samborsky named head men's golf coach at Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio -- Pete Samborsky, who competed for the Raiders from 1993-97, has been named the new head golf coach at Wright State University.

Samborsky was a key component as Wright State won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Championship in both 1996 and 1997, after finishing second in 1995. He claimed medalist honors as a senior in 1997 as he compiled a three-round score of 212, including a career-best 69 in the final round, as the Raiders tied a conference record in winning the team title by 44 strokes at the Country Club of the North in Beavercreek. He was named the team MVP that season as he recorded four other top 20 finishes and posted a 75.8 round average.

Samborsky tied for seventh at the MCC championship as a junior and tied for 12th as a sophomore, as he earned All-Conference honors as a junior and senior. During his college career he also served as a liaison to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was the recipient of the team's Raider Award as a junior.

"It is great to welcome Pete back to the Raider family," said WSU Senior Associate Director of Athletics Maureen Cooper. "His experiences during his time as a student athlete and since will be beneficial as we continue to build on the successes we have had in golf at Wright State. We look forward to working with him to achieve that success."

Since competing at WSU, Samborsky has put together a solid amateur career. He has won the prestigious Miami Valley Metropolitan Championship, a 72-hole stroke play event, in 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2008 and was second in 2003. He has had six top 20 finishes in the Ohio Amateur in this decade, and has qualified for the four USGA's championships. The US Amateur in 2001, and 2005, the US Mid-Amateur in 2002, and represented the state of Ohio in the 2007 USGA State Team Championship. Away from the course, Samborsky is on the Board of Directors for the Miami Valley Golf Association and has served as a Tournament Director.

"I'm honored to again be part of Wright State University and thankful for this great opportunity," said Samborsky. "I have great memories of my experiences at WSU and hope to be a part of several more as head golf coach."

A Cincinnati native, Samborsky is currently the Chief Financial Officer for ITS Financial in Dayton. Samborsky earned bachelor's degrees in both accountancy and finance from Wright State in 1998, and is a co-owner of two local Cold Stone Creamery ice cream stores in the Beavercreek/Bellbrook area. Samborsky replaces Fred Jefferson, who retired this spring after 25 seasons as head coach.
