INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso University junior Angie Porche and Youngstown State University junior Ruth Boscaljon have been named the Horizon League's Volleyball Players of the Week for the period of Sept. 1-7.
Porche, a native of Lynwood, Ill., earns her second straight Offensive Player of the Week nod after helping Valparaiso to victories over BCS-conference foes Louisville (25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 15-25, 15-9) and Wake Forest (25-20, 26-28, 25-20, 25-20).
Porche, who was named to Indiana University adidas Classic All-Tournament Team, drilled a Horizon League-high 61 kills over 12 games during the week. She now owns a league-best 118 smackdowns through 23 games.
The outside hitter registered back-to-back double-doubles against Indiana and Louisville on Friday and collected a single-game, circuit-best 28 kills vs. Wake Forest on Saturday. She also moved to fifth on Valpo's all-time kills chart during the weekend.
Boscaljon, a native of Elgin, Ill., grabs Defensive Player of the Week honors after helping Youngstown State to wins over Norfolk State (25-15, 25-10, 25-22), Howard (25-18, 25-22, 25-19) and Charlotte (25-17, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20).
Boscaljon recorded 17 blocks in 10 games during the week for a Horizon League-best average of 1.70. She collected two solo blocks and six block assists on Friday against Norfolk State. She added another solo block and eight assists on Saturday in matches vs. Howard and Charlotte.
The middle hitter, who managed 57 percent of her team's blocks in week two, helped Youngstown State pace the circuit in blocks per game (3.00).
Valparaiso returns to action on Friday with matches against Tennessee Tech and Furman in Bowling Green, Ky. Youngstown State is back on the hardwood Friday with showdowns vs. Elon and Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa.
