INDIANAPOLIS - Eight Horizon League women’s basketball teams are in action this weekend. Six non-conference contests will take place on Saturday and two more will be played on Sunday.
No. 23 Green Bay (9-1) tips off a four-game homestretch on Saturday as it hosts Evansville at 3pm ET. The Phoenix suffered their first regular season setback in 17 games on Dec. 12 at Marquette (63-60), but are 2-1 overall against the Purple Aces, defeating them 83-37 a season ago.
Evansville (5-4) has edged two Horizon League schools this year, with both wins coming by two points. The Purple Aces defeated Valparaiso 69-67 on Dec. 3 before topping Butler 51-49 on Dec. 7.
Cleveland State (6-2) continues a three game road trip on Saturday as it travels to Marshall at 7pm ET. Both Viking losses have come on the road this season, but Marshall is just 2-6 this year and has lost its last two contests. This marks only the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools, with the Thundering Herd holding a 2-1 lead in the series.
UIC (4-4) continues a five-game non-conference stretch against Illinois schools as it takes on Illinois on Saturday. The Flames and the Fighting Illini will square off at 11:30am ET at Chicago’s United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls, as part of a double-header, with the two school’s men’s teams featured at 1pm. The Flames are 1-2 so far against in-state rivals.
Wright State (5-4) closes out its five-game road swing on Saturday as it travels to Cincinnati for a 2pm ET tipoff. All five Raider wins have come on the road this season against non-league opponents. The last time WSU won five on the road was in 1987-88, its first season as a Division I program.
Valparaiso (2-7) continues its three-game homestand on Saturday after taking a week off for final exams. The Crusaders will host Chicago State in a 2:35pm ET contest to be carried live on the Horizon League Network. This marks the 40th meeting of the two teams. Valpo carries a 34-5 all time advantage, including a perfect 19-0 against the Cougars at home.
Detroit (4-5) closes out Saturday’s action as it finishes up a seven-game road swing with a 7pm ET visit to in-state rival Michigan. The Titans are 11-9 all-time against the Wolverines, but Michigan has won six in a row over Detroit. UDM’s last win over the Wolverines was on Jan. 9, 1994, when current Detroit head coach Autumn Rademacher led the Titans, as a freshman, to a 79-69 victory.
Butler (5-4) will kick off Sunday’s action with a trip to South Carolina to take on Coastal Carolina in the Beach Ball Classic. The Bulldogs will then face South Carolina on Tuesday. Butler and Coastal have met just once before with BU taking a 78-48 decision at Hinkle Fieldhouse two years ago. Current Bulldog Chloe Hamilton scored 10 points in that game.
Milwaukee returns to action of Sunday to finish up weekend play with a trip to Toledo. UWM is looking to snap a four-game losing streak after taking a week off. The Panthers and the Rockets will tipoff at 2pm ET.
