Saturday's Win Moves WSU Into First Place in Women's Soccer Standings

With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, Wright State jumped into first place with a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Milwaukee. The Raiders have 10 points, one point ahead of Milwaukee and Oakland who are tied for second with nine points. Valparaiso stands alone in fourth place with seven points, while Cleveland State, Detroit and Youngstown State all have six points.

Amanda Sivic scored her fifth goal of the season and Sarah Wood posted her fifth shutout of the year as the Cleveland State women's soccer team earned a key 1-0 victory at Green Bay in Horizon League action on Saturday afternoon.

CSU improved to 8-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the Horizon League, while Green Bay slipped to 4-6-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Wood, the Horizon League leader in saves, made seven saves this afternoon to raise her season total to 104.

The lone goal came in the 82nd minute when Sivic found a loose ball in front of the goal after a corner kick from Haleigh Shingary and knocked it in the back of the net.

Oakland 2, Detroit 0
With a first-half penalty kick by Meghan Reynolds and a second-half insurance goal by Serena San Cartier coupled with a third consecutive home shutout, the Oakland women's soccer team defeated Detroit Saturday evening, 2-0. The victory improved Oakland to 7-7-1, 3-2-0 and tied for second in the Horizon League standings, while Detroit dropped to 8-7-1, 2-3-0.

Oakland got on the board in the third minute when the Golden Grizzlies made good on a penalty kick opportunity. After an Oakland attacker was fouled in the box, Meghan Reynolds stepped up and calmly converted her second spot kick of the season and tally her team-best sixth goal of the season.

The remainder of the first half was a chess match in the midfield, as both teams had four shots apiece in the first 45 minutes and neither team had a save to their credit.

Oakland turned up the heat in the second half, however, out-shooting the Titans 9-5 and edging Detroit 4-0 in corner kicks in the latter stanza. The Golden Grizzles added to their lead in the 76th minute when Aly Rawson threaded a ball down the left flank to Joan Sieja, who then crossed it in to find San Cartier.
The senior then placed a shot back to the left post to make the game 2-0.

The Golden Grizzlies defense fended off Detroit's late pressure, with Payj O'Shea making a diving stop on a header shot by Alyssa Riley in the 84th minute.

O'Shea grabbed three saves for the shutout, her fourth solo clean sheet of the season and fifth this season for Oakland.

Valparaiso 2, Youngstown State 0
A pair of goals early in the second half were more than enough for the Valparaiso women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Youngstown State as the Crusaders earned their first road win of the season and picked up three key Horizon League points with a 2-0 victory.

The teams played to a scoreless draw through 45 minutes despite constant pressure from Valpo, as the Crusaders out-shot the Penguins 8-5 in the first half and also earned nine corner kicks. Both Valpo goalkeeper Kristen Manski and YSU goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky made two first-half saves to keep the game scoreless.

Valpo broke the seal on the scoreboard less than three minutes into the second half, however. Sophomore Rita Craven made a run down the left side, beating a pair of YSU players before collecting the ball from 12 yards out and sending it inside the far post to put the Crusaders on top, 1-0.

The Crusaders added an insurance goal in the 57th minute as well. Following a save by Manski, the senior unleashed a punt well down the field that Craven ran onto. Craven then sent a cross into the box to freshman Robin Wenzel, who was there to apply the finish into the upper-right 90 to make it 2-0 Valpo.

Manski had to make just one save following her assist on Wenzel's goal to maintain the clean sheet, ending the night with four total saves in her 30th career shutout. Podolsky stopped six shots for Youngstown State (4-10-1, 2-3-0 Horizon). Valpo ended the day with a 17-13 advantage in shots and an enormous 13-1 edge in corner kicks over the Penguins.

Wright State 1, Milwaukee 0
A Liz Soto goal with just over 10 minutes remaining gave the Wright State women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Milwaukee in a battle of the top two teams in the Horizon League standings Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Soto tallied her goal at the 79:54 mark of the second half, giving the senior defender two goals on the season.  Senior forward Emilie Fillion was credited with the assist, her third of the year.

Senior goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy recorded her fifth complete shutout of the season and the sixth of the year overall for WSU.  The Raiders led 12-10 in shots and 6-3 in corner kicks.
