Scholtens Tabbed by Padres In MLB Draft's 9th Round

SEACAUCUS, N.J. -- Wright State pitcher Jesse Scholtens became the second Raider selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, as the San Diego Padres took the right-hander in the ninth round.

Scholtens was Wright State's No. 1 starter in both seasons with the team. In his senior year, Scholtens tied for the Horizon League lead in wins with 10, making a League-best 16 starts and 109.2 innings pitched, is second in strikeouts with 95 and third in opposing batting average at .220 and in ERA at 2.95.  In league play, he went 6-1 with a 2.17 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 62.1 innings.

Scholtens pitched the first perfect game in school history on March 11 with a 1-0 win at Dayton, striking out a career-high 12 in the process.  He struck out nine at Youngstown State on April 22 and eight on three other occasions, including at North Carolina State on February 26.  The Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on March 14, Scholtens was a Second Team All-League selection in 2015.

Joining battery-mate Sean Murphy as second-day draftees, Scholtens is the 27th Raider drafted all-time, starting with Raider Hall of Famer Bob Grote, who was picked in the 12th round by the New York Mets.
