Scott Overall passed his first test at the 2006 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Sacramento, Calif., and he'll represent Butler University in the finals of the men's 5,000 meter run at the national meet. The standout Butler distance runner will compete for a national title in the 5,000 meter event at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex on Friday, June 9.

Overall placed seventh in the second heat of the men's 5,000 meter preliminaries on Wednesday, June 7. The top six finishers from each of the two heats, plus the next four fastest times advanced to Friday's finals. Overall's time of 14:01.01 was the seventh fastest posted in the competition. Shadrack Songok of Texas A & M-Corpus Christi posted the fastest time with a 13:55.32 finish, more than 17 seconds behind the school-record setting time of 13:38.19 Overall recorded at the Stanford Cardinal Qualifier in late April to qualify for the national meet.

Joining Overall and Songok in the finals are Richard Kiplagat and Stephen Chemlany of Iona University, Seth Summerside and Josphat Boit of the University of Arkansas, Obed Mutanya and Robert Cheseret of the University of Arizona,  University of Miami-Ohio's Daniel Huling, University of Wisconsin's Chris Solinsky, Texas Christian's Kip Kangogo,  South Alabama's Tonny Okello, Liberty's Josh McDougal, California's Giliat Ghebray, Colorado's Brent Vaughn and Paul Hefferon of Kansas.

The men's 5,000 meter finals are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (PDT, 10:30 p.m. in Indianapolis) on Friday and will be televised live by CSTV.
