INDIANAPOLIS -- Loyola forward Simone Law has been named the Horizon League women’s basketball Player of the Week, while Loyola guard Taylor Johnson has been named the Newcomer of the Week.
Law, a sophomore from South Holland, Ill., led the Ramblers in scoring in both of their games last week as Loyola moved to .500 in League play. She started the week with a game-high 19 points in Loyola’s 68-58 win over Valparaiso. On Saturday, she scored 18 of her game-high 24 points in the first half as the Ramblers won at Wright State, 79-70. She was 8-of-13 from the floor in the contest and also pulled down 10 rebounds against the Raiders to record her seventh double-double of the season.
Johnson, a freshman from Frankfort, Ill., earned Newcomer of the Week honors after averaging 18.0 ppg., 6.0 rpg., and 5.0 apg., in Loyola’s two wins last week. She had 13 points - on 6-of-10 shooting - nine rebounds, five assists and just one turnover in 35 minutes of action in the Ramblers win over Valparaiso. In the win at Wright State, after Law scored 18 points in the first half to keep the Ramblers even with the Raiders, Johnson scored 18 of her 23 points in the second half as Loyola pulled away from Wright State to win. Johnson was 7-of-14 from the field in the game and dished out five assists against the Raiders.
Loyola (10-13, 5-5) has won three straight games to move into fourth place in the conference. The Ramblers have two big games this week as they host two teams in front of them in the standings. Loyola faces Detroit (14-8, 7-3) on Thursday and Youngstown State (17-6, 7-3) on Saturday.
Top Performers for the Week:
Sarah Eichler, Green Bay(Sr., F) - Eichler led the Phoenix in scoring in both of their wins last week as she shot 66.7% (14-21) from the field. She had 14 points on 7-11 shooting and six assists and four rebounds in the win over Cleveland State. She scored 15 points on 7-10 shooting in the win over Youngstown State on Saturday.
Shalonda Winton, Cleveland State(Sr., F) - Winton averaged 25.7 ppg., and 9.7 rpg., in CSU’s three games last week. She had 32 points, nine rebounds, five blocks and four steals in the Vikings win over UIC on Monday. She also notched her 1,000th career rebound in the game against the Flames. She had her 14th double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds at Green Bay.
Shareta Brown, Detroit(So., F) - Brown posted her 10th double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds in UDM’s win over Wright State on Wednesday. She also handed out five assists and tied her career-high with two three-point field goals.
Brandi Brown, Youngstown State(Sr., F) - Brown averaged a double-double (17.5 ppg., & 10.5 rpg.) as YSU went 1-1 on its road trip last week. She had 15 points and 15 rebounds, both game-highs, in the Penguins win at Milwaukee on Thursday. On Saturday, she scored a game-high 20 points on 7-11 shooting in YSU’s loss at Green Bay.
Emily Decorah, Milwaukee(Jr., G) - Decorah connected on 10-18 shots last week, including 9-15 from three-point range. She scored a career-high 20 points against Youngstown State on Thursday.
Tabitha Gerardot, Valparaiso(Jr., F) - Gerardot recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds in Valpo’s 88-62 win over UIC on Saturday.
Top Newcomers for the Week:
Brionna Barnett, Green Bay(Fr., G) - Barnett scored a career-high 13 points on 5-6 shooting against Cleveland State on Thursday. She was 3-4 from long distance and also pulled down three rebounds vs. the Vikings.
Lexi Miller, Valparaiso(Fr., G) - Miller scored a career-high 13 points in the Crusaders win over UIC on Saturday. She also dished out a career-high 3 assists against the Flames.
Avyanna Young, Milwaukee(Fr., F) - Young averaged 5.5 ppg., and 5.5 rpg. for the Panthers last week. She scored a season-high nine points in UWM’s win over Cleveland State on Saturday.
