Six Horizon League men's soccer players earn All-Region accolades from NSCAA

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Horizon League's highly-successful men's soccer season earned high praise this week as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) named six League representatives to its various All-Region teams.

University of Illinois at Chicago sophomore Pavle Dundjer earned Second-Team All-Midwest Region recognition, while University of Detroit Mercy teammates Andrew Ornoch and Jason Massoglia received Second-Team All-Great Lakes region notice along with University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee senior Neil Dombrowski and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay junior Joshua Okoampa. Wright State University junior midfielder Tony Labudovski gained Third-Team All-Region status.

Dundjer one of only two sophomores named among the region's top 25 players. The midfielder finished third in the League with 22 points off seven goals and eight assists this season, helping the Flames to a 10-5-2 overall record. UIC finished tied for second place in the League's regular-season standings at 4-2-1.

In the Great Lakes Region, the Horizon League boasts four of the 11 representatives on the Second-Team honor unit. Ornoch topped the League scoring charts in 2005, collecting ten goals and 25 points. The junior forward earned the League's Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year honors after guiding the Titans to the regular-season championship as Detroit went 6-1-0 in loop play before falling to UW-Milwaukee in the League Championship match. Massoglia was the League's Defensive Player of the Year, but the junior defender also registered eight goals (tied for fifth in the League) for 16 points for the 12-6-2 Titans.

Dombrowski paced the Panthers to their fourth consecutive League Championship and fifth NCAA tournament appearance in a row, scoring nine goals and adding five assists for a 23-point total which ranked second in the League. Dombrowski's performance helped UWM compile a 14-4-5 overall ledger and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Okoampa matched Ornoch's League-best ten goals and tied Dundjer's 22-point total. Two of those ten markers came in the first round of the League Championship tournament, helping the sixth-seeded Phoenix upset third-seeded UIC as part of a 9-10-0 overall ledger.

Labudovski posted nine goals and added two assists for 20 points this season. Six of his goals came in the Raiders' last seven matches of the season as WSU rebounded from a slow start to finish 10-10-0 overall.

Four Indiana University performers earned First-Team All-Great Lakes mention, including forward Jake Peterson and Lee Nguyen plus midfielder Brian Plotkin and defender Jed Zayner. Also on the front line are the University of Akron's Ross McKenzie and the University of Cincinnati's Omar Cummings, with Akron's Youhann Mauger joining Plotkin and Michigan State University's Ryan McMahen in the midfield. On defense, Zayner joins the University of Notre Dame's Greg Dalby and Ohio State University's Kyle Veris, with the University of Kentucky's Andy Gruenebaum in goal.

The Midwest Region's First-Team honorees include a trio of Drake University representatives in Chris Hamburger, Jesse Baker adn Corey Farabi, along with Southern Methodist University teammates Duke Hashimoto and Jay Needham. Vanderbilt University's John Krause, the University of Tulsa's Kyle Brown and Missouri State University standout Ryan Anderson join Hashimoto on the forward line, with Western Kentucky University's Richard Mupfudze and Oral Roberts University's Jorge Flor alongside Hamburger and Baker in the midfield. Farabi, Needham and Creighton University's Matt Wieland comprise the defensive back line in front of Bradley University goalkeeper Chris Dunsheath.

The First-Team selections from each of the NSCAA's eight regions are placed on the national ballot for the association's All-America Team. Those honors will be announced next week.

Six of the eight Horizon League teams posted nine or more victories in 2005, with four finishing in double figures. As a group, the League finished 37-37-10 overall in non-conference play. Five League teams were ranked among the NSCAA's regional top ten at different times in 2005, with three finishing the season among the top teams in their respective regions. UW-Milwaukee (third) and Detroit (eighth) represented the League in the Great Lakes Region while UIC finished ninth in the Midwest Region rankings.
