Wright State 76, Ohio Dominican 64
The Wright State men's basketball team outscored Ohio Dominican 18-6 over the final six minutes to slip past the Panthers 76-64 Sunday afternoon at WSU's Nutter Center.

A Joe Thomasson jumper gave the Raiders their biggest lead of the first half at 27-19 with 5:21 remaining and the margin was still eight until ODU closed the period with a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to just 32-31 at the break.

WSU shot 44 percent in the opening 20 minutes compared to 36 percent for Ohio Dominican, but the Panthers were also 12 of 15 at the foul line to just six of seven for the Raiders.

ODU briefly led early in the second half and the game was tied at 58 until a Reggie Arceneaux three with six minutes to go gave Wright State the lead for good.  That started the Raiders on the decisive 18-6 run down the stretch, six of those points coming from Joe Thomasson.

Both teams shot the ball well in the second half as WSU hit 17 of 25 shots in the second half to finish at 56 percent overall while ODU made 12 of 23 attempts to end the night at 44 percent.  Wright State led 40-22 in points in the paint and 24-9 in points off of turnovers.

Hopkins led the Raiders with 25 points while Arceneaux had 18 and Thomasson 15 along with eight rebounds.

Mark Minch paced Ohio Dominican (0-3) with 21 points while Trent Weaver had 11.

Youngstown State 71, Oberlin 53
The Youngstown State men's basketball team closed out Oberlin with a solid final 10 minutes as the Penguins picked up their first win of the season, 71-53, on Sunday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins (1-1) held a 48-44 advantage with 9:42 left before using a 17-2 surge to push their advantage out to 65-46 with just under five minutes left in the contest. YSU eventually ended the contest by scoring 26 of the final 35 points.

Helping to lead the charge was junior Bobby Hain who had a game-high 20 points while grabbing 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and 10th of his career. Hain was a strong 8-of-9 from the free-throw line and made six field goals en route to his 20-point performance.

As a squad, YSU had five players finish in double figures as Shawn Amiker (13, Marcus Keene (12), Fletcher Larson (10) and DJ Cole (10) all joined Hain in the category. Fletcher's 10 points, all of which came in the first half with Hain in foul trouble, set a new career high.

The Guins never lost the lead they built at halftime, but Oberlin did pull within one on three occasions in the second half, the last time coming at 42-41 with 12:07 left in the contest. At that point, YSU scored the next six points before the Yeoman (1-1) pulled with 48-44 at the 9:42 mark. After that, the contest was all YSU.

For the game, YSU shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) following a strong second half in which it made 13-of-25 shots (52 percent). Oberlin made 17-of-50 field-goal attempts (34 percent) with 18 misses coming from beyond the 3-point arc. The Penguins had 19 assists on 23 buckets led by Cole who had nine.

In the first half, YSU took 10 more field-goal attempts and made three more than the Yeoman to go on top 29-22 at the break.

Larson eclipsed his career high by scoring 10 points in the opening period by knocking down 5-of-8 shots from the field. Cole was the creator with six assists as the Guins had nine assists on 10 made baskets.

Leading 9-7, the Penguins scored eight straight points to grab their biggest advantage of the opening half at 17-7 on a 3-pointer by Keene at the 8:08 mark.

But the Yeoman didn't back down trimming the deficit to three on a pair of occasions, the last of which in the opening half was 19-16 on a Jack Poyle basket with 5:18 left on the clock.

YSU ended the last five minutes of the half on a 10-5 run to go on top 29-22.

Missouri 56, Valparaiso 41
Valparaiso could not overcome 32.6% shooting on the road at Missouri Sunday evening in Columbia, Mo., as the Tigers downed the Crusaders by a 56-41 final.

Despite hitting just 8-of-21 (38.1%) from the field in the first half, Valpo went into halftime down just one point, as its defense held Mizzou to 25% (6-of-24) shooting in the opening 20 minutes.  But after the break, the Tigers hit better than 50% of their shots, while the Crusaders were just 7-of-25 (28%) in the second period.

It was a slow start to the game for the Crusaders, who hit just one shot in the first six-plus minutes, but Missouri only scored seven points in that same stretch to keep Valpo within striking distance.  A triple from Darien Walker (Chicago, Ill./Simeon [John A. Logan/Arizona Western]) and a driving basket from David Skara (Zadar, Croatia/Ekonomska Skola Zadar) tied the game, a refrain repeated a number of times in the first half.

Twice more, the Tigers pulled ahead by five points in the first half, but both times the Crusaders rallied.  An inside basket by Tevonn Walker (Montreal, Quebec/Vanier College) finally gave Valpo its first lead at 19-18 with 3:30 to play in the first half.  The Tigers scored six of the next eight points to pull back ahead, but a pair of free throws from E. Victor Nickerson (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross [Charlotte]) brought the Crusaders within 24-23 at the half.  It looked momentarily like Valpo would actually lead at intermission, but Tevonn Walker’s coast-to-coast drive with 3.6 seconds to play resulted in a layup just after the clock hit triple zero.

Valpo stuck with Missouri early in the second half, as Keith Carter (Maywood, Ill./Proviso East [Saint Louis]) hit Vashil Fernandez (Kingston, Jamaica/Princeton Day [Md.] Academy) on the fast break for a two-handed slam which gave the Crusaders a lead with 18:50 to play.  A pair of free throws from Alec Peters (Washington, Ill./Washington) two minutes later tied the game at 27-27, but that would be Valpo’s last share of the lead.

Missouri went on a 10-0 run over the next five minutes to go ahead by double figures.  The closest the Crusaders were able to get the rest of the way was 41-34 with 8:30 to play after five consecutive points from Nickerson.  The Tigers responded with back-to-back baskets with the shot clock winding down against Valpo’s zone on their next two trips to secure control for good.

Nickerson paced the Crusaders on Sunday with 12 points in 17 minutes off the bench, hitting four of his five field goal attempts in his second game in a Valpo uniform.  No other Crusader scored more than seven points, as Peters scored seven in 27 foul-plagued minutes.  Jubril Adekoya (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led the Crusaders on the glass with a game-high eight rebounds.

Missouri (1-1) was led by 16 points from Wes Clark, who also grabbed six rebounds.  Johnathan Williams III added ten points as well.
