Horizon League Swimmers of the Week

 

Daniel Thomasson

Cleveland State, Senior, Sodertajle, Sweden

Thomasson paced an abbreviated CSU lineup at the UC-Irvine Distance Invitational on Jan. 7, swimming to a win in a field of 45 in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:42.73. Thomasson now holds two of the top five times in the League in that event.

 

Colleen Dougherty

UIC, Sophomore, Woodstock, Ill.

 

Despite competing in a longer distance, the sprint-freestyle specialist earned a victory in the 200 freestyle against Valparaiso with a career-best 1:58.77 finish.  Dougherty also anchored the winning 200 medley relay team with a 50 free split of 24.56 and posted an impressive 50 free split time of 24.18 in the 200 free relay.

 

Horizon League Divers of the Week

 

Tristan Oleynik

UIC, Fr., Wheaton, Ill.

Oleynik posted career-best scores on both the 1-meter (293.33) and 3-meter (262.20) boards, winning both events against Valparaiso.  The performances propelled him to the fourth-best score in the League on the 1-meter board and the ninth-best on the 3-meter.

 

Stephanie Crowley

UIC, Fr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa

The rookie diver had a career day against Valparaiso, leading the Flames with a 1-meter score of 217.80 and a 3-meter tally of 229.28 to pick up victories in both events.

 

Other Top Performances

 

Adan Jimenez

UIC, Sr., Tinley Park, Ill.

Jimenez swam to a victory in the 100 backstroke with a season-best 53.30 and picked up a 200 freestyle win with another season-best time, finishing in 1:45.91.  He also led off the victorious 200 medley relay as the Flames defeated Valparaiso in a dual meet.

 

Raj Duggal

Butler, Jr., Columbus, Ind.

Duggal turned in the top performance for the Bulldogs at the University of Indianapolis Invitational, finishing third in the 1650-yd freestyle.  Duggal got the wall in 17:24.43.

 

Kirsty McKechnie

Cleveland St., Sr., Durban, South Africa

McKechnie, the only representative for the CSU women's team at the UC-Irvine Distance Invitational on Jan. 7, swam to a 15th-place finish in a field of 69 with a time of 4:44.12 in the 400 IM. The time is the eighth-best in the League this season.

 

Mary Beth Arnold

Butler, Junior, Indianapolis, Ind.

Arnold turned in the top performance for the Bulldogs at the University of Indianapolis Invitational, setting a season-best mark of 1:08.05 in the 100-yd backstroke.  She also finished third in the 400-yd IM with a 5:05.23 mark.

 

Two League teams ranked in CSCAA Mid-Major Poll

 

Two Horizon League teams are ranked in the top 25 of the College Swim Coaches Association of America Division I Mid-Major Poll, announced Dec. 20. On the men's side, both the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wright State University earned a top 25 ranking, with the Panthers coming in at No. 12 with 228.56 points followed by the Raiders at No. 19 (220.45).  The U.S. Naval Academy leads the poll with 246.89 points.

 

On the women's side, UW-Milwaukee is ranked 15th among mid-major programs with 228.38 points, while Wright State comes in at No. 24 with 222.18 points, 22.18 behind overall leader Harvard University.

 

The CSCAA mid-major poll is released four times throughout the swimming and diving season, November 15, December 21, February 7 and March 7.  The poll includes schools from the America East, Atlantic 10, Big West, Colonial Athletic Association, EISL, Horizon League, Ivy League, Metro Atlantic, Mid-America, Mid-Continent, Missouri Valley, North Eastern, Patriot and Sun Belt conferences.
