2007 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships

The UIC Natatorium will play host to the 2007 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships, starting Wednesday, Feb. 21.  The competition continues through Saturday, Feb. 24 when the League champions will be crowned.

On the men's side, Cleveland State's Bjorn Schantz was named the 2006 Athlete of the Year and will return after claiming three individual titles at last year's League championship in the 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free.  Chris Dalman will also try to get back to the podium for the Vikings as he looks to defend the 1-meter title.

The UW-Green Bay women will try for their third consecutive League championship, led by Danielle DeGrand.  The sophomore won the 200 back and the 200 IM last season and was named the Newcomer of the Year.

Wright State came away with both runner-up trophies last season and will need strong performances from upperclassmen to get back in winning fashion.  Rafael Candido has swept the breaststroke events for the last three years and will look to continue that trend.  Teammate Warren Thompson also claimed the individual medley events last year.  Catalina Martinez swept the 1000 free and 1650 free at the League championship for the second-straight season last year and is back to defend those events.

UW-Milwaukee's Chase Gravengood tied Thompson for the victory in the 200 IM at the championship, but he also picked up two other individual victories in the butterfly events.  Lindsay Caldwell will return for the Panther women as the 2006 Athlete of the Year after claiming the 50 free and 100 free at the League championships.  Teammate Molly Finn will also look to defend her titles in the 200 fly and 400 IM.

Results of the Championship can be seen live through the Horizon League website at www.horizonleague.org.

Highlights of the Championship can be seen free on the Horizon League Network and will become available as soon as possible.
