Flames Grind Out League-Opening Win Against YSU, 77-71-- Box Score
CHICAGO - The UIC men’s basketball team (5-11, 1-0 HL) used a 19-2 run late in the second half to claim a 77-71 comeback victory in the Horizon League opener against Youngstown State (9-7, 0-1 HL) on Friday at home. The Flames outscored YSU, 49-34, in the second half as fifth-year senior Jay Harris led all scorers with 25 points, including 18 in the final period. Junior Jake Wiegand added 15 points and six rebounds.

“This team has so much heart,” said head coach Howard Moore. “When they put their minds to something there is nothing they can not accomplish. I am very proud of our effort in the second half. We battled on every possession and fought our way to a victory. In our minds we are 1-0 right now.”

The Penguins jumped out to a 29-11 lead by the 9:04 mark of the first half as they took advantage of six UIC turnovers in the opening minutes. UIC regained its composure and closed out the first period with a 17-8 run, cementing the 37-28 halftime score. Read more

Four Score in Double Figures in 77-71 Loss at UIC-- Box Score
Chicago, Illinois -- Junior Bobby Hain scored 19 and sophomore Osandai Vaughn recorded a career-high 18 points, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team fell to UIC, 77-71, in the Horizon League opener for both teams, Friday, at the UIC Pavilion.

Senior DJ Cole and sophomore Marcus Keene each added 11 points and Cole was credited with eight assists.

The Penguins fall to 9-7 overall and 0-1 in the Horizon League while UIC improves to 5-11 overall and 1-0 in the league. Read more

Men Pull Away to Defeat Detroit in League Opener-- Box Score
After being down much of the first half, the Wright State men's basketball team shot 62 percent in scoring 44 points in the second half to defeat Detroit 70-57 in the Horizon League opener for both teams Friday night at WSU's Nutter Center.

10 straight points, including back-to-back threes from Juwan Howard, Jr., gave the Titans a 13-4 lead nearly eight minutes into the contest and Detroit maintained the advantage for most of the first half until a Grant Benzinger three gave WSU a two-point edge at 24-22 with 2:55 remaining, an edge the Raiders held going into the halftime break at 26-24.

Both teams struggled offensively in the opening 20 minutes as Wright State shot 38 percent overall, but was just one of 10 from three-point range, while the Titans shot 29 percent despite hitting three of six three-pointers. Read more

Titans Drop Horizon League Opener at Wright State, 70-57-- Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio (1/2/15) – Sophomore Chris Jenkins recorded a new career-high with 14 points in his Horizon League debut, but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped its league opener, 70-57, to Wright State Friday night at the Nutter Center. The loss was the Titans sixth-straight dating back to Dec. 13, 2014.

Detroit (6-9, 0-1 HL) led 35-34 with 16:13 left in regulation, before the Raiders put together a 21-5 run to build their largest lead of the game 55-40 with 10 minutes left. The Titans would respond with a 7-0 run to trim the lead to eight, 55-47, with 7:24 remaining, but that was as close as the score would get as Wright State closed the game with a 15-10 run to earn it first win of league play.

Jenkins finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while senior forward Juwan Howard Jr. scored a t team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Jarod Williams pitched in nine points, while Brandan Kearney added six. Read more

Strong Second Half Lifts CSU Past Milwaukee-- Box Score
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State used a strong second half, shooting 82-percent (23-28) from the field over the final 20 minutes, and claimed an 84-57 victory over Milwaukee in the Horizon League opener for both teams on Friday night in the Wolstein Center.

The Vikings moved to 7-8 and 1-0 in the league, while Milwaukee fell to 5-10 overall (0-1 HL).

Trey Lewis led the Vikings with 27 points and four assists. It was his 10th career 20-point game, including his fifth this year. Anton Grady finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and two steals, while Charlie Lee had 16 points and three assists. Read more

Milwaukee Drops Horizon League Opener At Cleveland State-- Box Score
CLEVELAND (January 2, 2015) – Host Cleveland State (7-8,1-0 Horizon) shot 82 percent (23-for-28) from the field in the second half to collect an 84-57 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (5-10, 0-1 Horizon) tonight at the Wolstein Center in the Horizon League opener for both teams. Matt Tiby and Steve McWhorter scored 16 points each to lead Milwaukee, which shot 35 percent (14-for-40) from the field for the night.

The game was a tale of two halves. In the first half, Milwaukee, the defending Horizon League Tournament champion, lived by the three-pointer, shooting 38 percent (5-for-13) from beyond the arc to help it to a 30-27 lead at the break. The Panthers, who shot 42 percent from the field and held the Vikings to 36 percent in the opening period, led by as many as seven points (28-21).

The early going in the second half was a back-and-forth affair with the lead changing hands 10 times in the first six minutes and 19 seconds. McWhorter hit a pair of free throws to put the Panthers on top, 43-42, but a layup by Demonte Flannigan sparked a 7-0 Vikings run that put the hosts ahead, 49-43. Read more

Felder, Oakland Defeat Valparaiso 89-75 in OT-- Box Score
ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) - Kahlil Felder scored a career-high 32 points, including 11 in overtime, and Oakland put away Valparaiso 89-75 in the Horizon League opener for both teams on Friday night.

Felder went 19 of 24 on free throws, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists. Jalen Hayes had 16 points with eight boards and Nick Daniels chipped in 14 points for the Golden Grizzlies (5-10, 1-0).

Tevonn Walker led the Crusaders (13-3, 0-1) with 22 points and Keith Carter added 18. Read more
