Horizon League Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Ryan Hamning
Cleveland State, Fr., Middletown, Ohio
Freshman Hamning became the first Viking man to post a win over an opponent from Michigan State last Saturday when he defeated the Spartan's Tyler Sauerbrey at No. 3 singles (6-0, 4-6, 6-3). With the victory, Hamning upped his season record to 13-5.

Detroit, So., Hamilton, Ontario
Maricevic sealed the Titans' victory over IPFW with her 7-5, 6-4 win over Sachi Janek at the No. 3 singles position. Earlier in the match, she teamed with Stephanie Hill for an 8-3 doubles win- Detroit's lone victory in the three doubles matches.

Eric Breitenbach
Butler, Jr., Northbrook, Ill.
Breitenbach claimed a win at No. 3 singles against IUPUI on Friday (Jan. 19), topping Ross Gehlhausen 6-1, 6-3. He also teamed up with Sandy Berry to score an 8-3 doubles victory over Gehlhausen and Tsuyoshi Yamabe at No. 2.

UIC, Fr., Norway
Newcomer Harbo looked strong in his collegiate debut this past Friday, taking Vanja Grgec to the limit at No. 4 singles before falling in three frames, 7-6, 5-7, 10-5.

Sarah Galon
Cleveland State, Sr., Waianae, Hawaii
With a win over Christine Bader at No. 1 singles on Saturday, Galon became the first CSU woman in school history to defeat an opponent from Michigan State. Galon handed Bader the loss in three sets, prevailing in a tie-breaker (6-3, 4-6, 11-9).

Lubica Nadasska
UIC, Jr., Bratislava, Slovakia
Nadasska made her dual match debut for the Flames a memorable one, downing Bowling Green's Ashley Jakupcin in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1 singles Saturday. Nadasska and Callan Smith almost pulled out a No. 1 doubles win before falling in a hotly contested bout against Jenna Nussbaum and Kelsey Jakupcin by an 8-6 score.

Jennifer Tan
UW-Green Bay, Jr., Palatine, Ill.
Tan had a pair of wins Jan. 21 to help the Phoenix defeat IPFW. Tan won at No. 2 singles (6-4, 0-6, 6-3) and paired with Aschley Jurgella at No. 2 doubles for an 8-2 win. For the year, Tan is has three singles wins and a 4-4 mark at doubles.

News from Around the League

The Butler University men start the spring season with a pair of Big Ten duals. The Bulldogs fell to No. 32 Michigan to open the season last weekend and will travel to Columbus to face Ohio State Wednesday afternoon. The women will also begin their season with a Big Ten foe as they are scheduled to face in-state rival Indiana on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Cleveland State University players Sarah Galon and Ryan Hamning pulled off an impressive feat as the Vikings opened spring play last weekend. The duo picked up singles wins in dual matches against Michigan State, with Galon winning at No. 1 singles and Hamning taking the victory at the No. 3 position. The wins marked the first time a CSU player has defeated a Spartan in the program's history. The Vikings return to action this week as the women travel to Akron on Friday and the men host St. Francis on Saturday.

University of Detroit Mercy opened the spring season with a convincing 6-1 win over IPFW on Friday. The Titans swept the singles spots, losing only the doubles point with setbacks at the top two positions. Detroit will resume play this weekend as they travel to Michigan State.

The University of Illinois at Chicago men open the spring slate with a pair of dual matches against opponents from the Big East conference. The Flames dropped their opening match against DePaul on Friday, but look to rebound this weekend as they travel to Marquette. Newcomer Lubica Nadasska provided a bright spot for the women this weekend as she claimed her first dual match win as a member of the Flames by defeating Ashley Jakupcin of Bowling Green at No. 1 singles. The team, however, fell 5-2.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee begins the spring season on February 3 as they travel to Indianapolis to face IUPUI and Butler in consecutive days. During those match-ups, the Panther line-up will feature five newcomers, highlighted by Kari Kastenholz at the No. 1 singles position.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women split two dual matches last weekend, falling to Western Michigan before holding on to beat IPFW 4-3. Jennifer Tan gave the Phoenix the edge over the Mastadons, picking up both a victory at No. 2 singles and a key win at No. 2 with Aschley Jurgella to help Green Bay grab the doubles point. The Phoenix men, led by returning 2006 Player of the Year Tim Prudlow, begin the spring on Feb. 3 with duals against Chicago State and the University of Chicago.

In addition to playing a minimal fall schedule, the Wright State University men have delayed the start of the spring slate until the upcoming weekend. Due to a forfeit last week at Michigan State, the Raiders will not officially begin play until Jan. 26 when the team takes on IPFW. The women, however, opened their schedule with a loss 7-0 loss to Toledo. They resume play on Wednesday when the team travels to Muncie, Indiana, to take on Ball State.

Youngstown State University kicks of the spring season as they women prepare to take on both Toledo and Bowling Green this weekend. The Penguin men, led by 2006 Second-Team All-League selection Scott Kathary and seniors Tom Barth and Brian Meek, begin their season on February 2 at IPFW.

Valparaiso University joins the Horizon League in July 2007. The Crusader men finished second in the Mid-Continent Conference last season, the highest-ever finish for the program, while the women won their fourth-consecutive regular season and third-straight NCAA tournament berth. The Crusaders begin the spring on February 2 as the men take on DePaul and the women battle Butler.
