Men's Player of the Week

Kathary finished in first place after three rounds of singles at the St. Bonaventure Classic. He also joined teammate Ryan Trapp to go undefeated at the No. 1 doubles position, for a record of 3-0.

Women's Player of the Week

Anna Volkova
Youngstown State
Sophomore
Sochi, Russia



Volkova won in the first two rounds in the No 1 flight at the Bowling Green Invitational before losing to a Toledo foe in the championship match. Overall, she finished second in the singles flight, and earned sixth place in the the No. 1 doubles flight with teammate Emily Thayer.

Breitenbach scored a pair of singles wins at the Ball State Invitational while playing in the "A" flight. He rallied from down a set to claim a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory in the first round before sweeping a Cleveland State foe in straight sets (6-1, 6-0).

Fr., Calgary, Alberta

Brough went 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles at the four-team Art Peterson Invitational on Sept. 7.

Minic made the finals in the No. 4 singles flight at the Bowling Green Invitational over the weekend. She bested opponents from Bowling Green (three sets) and Youngstown State before falling in the finals to a foe from Xavier.

Lauryn Grimando
Green Bay
So., Oak Brook, Ill.

Grimando went 2-0 in singles action against UW-Eau Claire, posting a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position and an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

Martina Schnapp
Milwaukee
Fr., Boynton Beach, Fla.

Schnapp went 3-2 in singles action and 4-1 in doubles, splitting two dual matches at the No. 1 singles position, and winning two doubles matches at the No. 2 spot. Overall, she finished fifth in the "A" singles flight, and fifth in the "B" doubles flight.

Horizon League News and Notes

Butler University
The Butler men opened up their fall season at the Ball State Invitational from Sept. 14-16. Senior Eric Breitenbach scored a pair of singles wins in the A Flight, while senior Sam Brown and newcomer Brandon Bayliss advanced to the finals of Flight B doubles competition.

Cleveland State University
The Viking men opened up fall play at the Ball State Invitational. Rob West advanced to the "B" singles semi-finals and Ryan Hamning and Phi Orno were each eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the "A" singles draw.

On the women's side, freshman Sanda Bjelon claimed third place in the "B" singles flight at the Bradley Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 9), while the doubles team of Jenn Myers and Christine Vogelgesang finished second in their flight. At the Bowling Green Invitational, Myers and teammate Charlotte Gibbons each finished second in their respective singles flights, while Denisa Muntean teamed with Morgan Ungerott to finish second in their doubles flight.

University of Detroit Mercy
Zeljka Minic of the Titan women's team posted a pair of singles victories at the Bowling Green Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 15) to earn a spot in the final-round match in the Number 4 singles flight, and junior Annie Moore fought of a match point and came from behind to win her singles match. The team was 8-5 against Horizon league opponents in head-to-head matchups during the two-day tournament. At the DePauw Invitational on Sept. 9, the entire Titan squad saw success as each of the eight players won their singles matches in final round action.

University of Wisconsin-Green Bay
The Phoenix men competed at the Art Peterson Invitational on Sept. 7-8, and had stellar results from two newcomers, as John Brough and Mike Wesley each went 3-0 in singles action, and each added 2-1 records in doubles play.

The Green Bay women opened their fall season on Saturday (Sept. 15) with a 6-1 dual victory over in-state rival UW-Eau Claire. Sophomore Lauryn Grimando and freshman Callee Conda won twice for Green Bay, each taking their singles matches, and teaming up for a doubles victory at the No. 3 spot.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
The Miwaukee women's team won its first two duals of the fall season, claiming 6-1 wins over both UW-Whitewater, and UW-River Falls. Freshman Jenna Felsher is off to a 4-1 start in singles action, while sophomores Kelly Drvaric and Kari Kastenholz teamed up to finish third in "A" singles at the Bradley Invitational.

University of Illinois at Chicago
The UIC men and women will see their first action of the fall season this weekend, when the men's team competes at the Bradley Invitational and the women's team goes across town to play in the DePaul Invitational.

Valparaiso University
The Crusader men's team starts play this weekend (Sept. 21-22) at the Bradley Invitational and then hosts the Valpo Fall Classic the following weekend (Sept. 28-29). The women will begin competition in October at the Toledo Invitational.

Wright State University
No report this week.

Youngstown State University
At the St. Bonaventure Fall Classic, Scott Kathary finished in first place in the three singles rounds, and joined teammate Ryan Trapp to go undefeated in doubles play during the tournament.

The Penguin women competed at the Bowling Green Invitational, where sophomore Anna Volkova won in the first two rounds of the No. 1 flight before losing in the championship match. She finished second in the flight, and joined teammate Emily Thayer to finish sixtth in the No. 1 flight of doubles.
