Horizon League Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Molly Casperson
Butler, Fr., Neenah, Wis.
Casperson notched her fourth-straight singles win at the No. 1 position, helping Butler to a victory over Dayton with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Kate Mellion. She also teamed up with Becky Jenkins at No. 2 doubles to score a 8-2 decision.

Evan West
Butler, Sr., Greenwood, Ind.
West was the Bulldog's top performer last weekend, going 2-0 in singles competition. He notched Butler's lone win against No. 34 Kentucky on Saturday, scoring a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Kenny Hodge at No. 4 singles. He then helped the Bulldogs to a victory at Bradley on Sunday, scoring a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Matt Metully.

Sebastian Lystad
UIC, Fr., Oslo, Norway
Lystad improved to 2-1 at No. 1 singles for the Flames with two straight-set victories over the weekend. He defeated IPFW's Nabil Mourad Filho by a 6-2, 6-2 count before downing Sean Curley of Robert Morris in a 6-2, 6-1 sweep. Lystad also went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles with Eric Fey.

Kelly Drvaric
UW-Milwaukee, Fr., Waukesha, Wis.
Drvaric won her singles and doubles matches in UWM's win over UW-Green Bay on Friday night. Drvaric pulled out a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Jennifer Tan and then teamed up with Ali O'Neal for the Panthers' lone doubles victory.

Aneta Maricevic
Detroit, So., Hamilton, Ontario
Maricevic won three straight-set matches last week at No. 2 singles. While UDM lost to Bradley overall, Maricevic picked up one of the Titans' three points with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. She also helped UDM to victories over Evansville and Robert Morris with a 6-4, 6-4 win over UE's Beth Peyton and a dominating 6-0, 6-1 performance against Libby Shaw of Robert Morris.

Both Butler University tennis teams picked up wins in weekend play, with the men defeating Bradley 4-3 and the women knocking off Dayton 5-2. The men, who also fell to No. 34 Kentucky last week, are now idle until Feb. 28, while the women move into a busy week with matches against Ball State on Saturday, and Toledo and Bowling Green on Sunday.

The Cleveland State University women's team was idle this week as it prepared to begin League play this Friday against Youngstown State. The contest will be the first of the League slate for either team. The Viking men were also idle last week but will face Toledo and Robert Morris at home this weekend.

After a loss on Friday to Bradley, the University of Detroit Mercywomen snapped a five-match losing streak with a 5-2 win over Evansville last Saturday morning. The Titans swept the No. 2-No. 5 singles spots to pick up the victory against the Aces, then kept on winning by blanking Robert Morris 7-0 that afternoon. Sophomore Aneta Maricevic and freshman Svetlana Flankova were perfect in singles play, each going 3-0 on the weekend.

The University of Illinois at Chicago women were idle last week, after weather postponed the scheduled match with Illinois State. The Flames look to continue more than a decade of dominance as they open League play this week with contests against both UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay. The UIC women have not lost a League contest since falling to the Phoenix on April 21, 1996 in the title match of the MCC Championship. Since that loss, the Flames have rattled off 83 consecutive League victories, including 57 in the regular season and 26 in championship play.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's 5-2 victory over UW-Green Bay was the first in school history and the first Panther triumph over a Horizon League opponent since defeating Cleveland State in 2003. UWM now has a total of five wins on the season, its most since claiming six victories back in the 2000-01 season.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women continue in League play this week as they travel to Chicago to face defending champion UIC. The Phoenix began the League season with a 5-2 loss to UW-Milwaukee last week. On the men's side, UW-Green Bay suffered a 5-2 loss to Wisconsin.

The Youngstown State University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the spring season last weekend with an impressive 6-1 defeat of St. Francis (Pa). The Penguins swept all three doubles positions to earn the point, then handed the Red Flash losses at the lower five singles positions. The Penguin women, who were idle this week, are still in search of their first win this spring.

Valparaiso University sophomore Kim Sajevic, who was named Mid-Continent Conference Athlete of the Week for Feb. 13, continued her winning ways this past week, posting singles wins over Libby Shaw of Robert Morris (6-0, 6-0) and Hanna Hager of IPFW (5-7, 6-2, 6-0). She also picked up two wins at No. 3 doubles, teaming with Lindsey Gustafson for an 8-6 win over Evansville and Julie Wingstrom for an 8-0 triumph against RMU. The Valparaiso men were idle last week, but return to action on Saturday against Marquette.
