Horizon League Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

 

Brandon Gill

Butler, Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.

Gill led the Bulldogs to an impressive 3-0 week that included three 7-0 sweeps. Gill downed Dayton's Tom Murphy, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 1 singles spot in the team's non-Horizon League match last week. Gill also dropped YSU's Scott Kathary, 6-1, 6-2, and Cleveland State's Olivier Dhaine in three sets at the top spot. Gill then combined with senior Parker Ross for three wins at No. 1 singles on the week.

 

Horizon League Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

 

Tayo Bailey

Butler, Sr., Chicago, Ill.

Butler senior Tayo Bailey posted a combined 5-1 record last week as Butler won two of three Horizon League matches. Bailey scored straight set singles wins at the No. 2 spot against Detroit, Youngstown State and Cleveland State. Bailey lost just 12 games total in her six singles sets. The senior had a 2-1 record at the No. 2 doubles spot as well.

Nick Camilleri

Wright State, Fr., Melbourne, Australia

Camilleri went 2-0 against Cleveland State on Saturday with a singles win over Jay Tee, 6-2, 6-2, and a doubles win with Lance Koetter over Tee and Olivier Dhaine, 8-1.

 

Eric Hines

UW-Green Bay, Jr., Omaha, Neb.

Hines went 3-1 on the weekend, posting a pair of wins at No. 6 singles and a victory at No. 3 doubles. Against Valparaiso April 2, Hines won in two sets at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-4, while pairing with Scott Dickert for a 9-7 win in doubles play. The day previous against Dayton, Hines tallied a 6-1, 6-0 victory in singles action.

 

Ivan Kovalev

UIC, Sr.,  Almaty, Kazakhstan

Kovalev rebounded from a 7-5 first-set loss to Youngstown State's Scott Kathary to win their No. 1 singles match with a 6-4 second-set victory and a 10-4 clinching of the tiebreaker. Kovalev also came within three points of winning the tiebreaker and the match against Southern Illinois' Felipe Villasenor at the top spot on Saturday. The senior and defending Horizon League Player of the Year went undefeated in No. 1 doubles on the weekend with two victories.  

 

Annie Moore

Detroit, Fr., St. Clair, Mich.

Freshman Annie Moore scored a pair of No. 1 singles victories last week for the Titans. She notched Detroit's lone point at Butler with a 6-0, 7-6 win over Alaina Griffin, and also teamed with Kelly Davis for a victory in No. 1 doubles. Moore also outlasted Indianapolis' Lindsey Fischer in a three-set triumph, helping the Titans to a 5-2 victory at U of I.

 

Jessica Lee

Wright State, Jr., Canton, Ohio

Lee won her singles match with Jenn Myers of Cleveland State in the second spot on Saturday, 7-6(5), 6-0.

 

Nicole Haralambopoulos

Youngstown State, Fr., Syndenham, Australia

Haralambopoulos registered No. 5 spot victories over Duquesne as well as Butler. Haralambopoulos' victory at Duquesne came with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alexandria Albana. Then, on Saturday she defeated Butler's Ashley Harrison 6-3, 6-4.

 

Megan Gregory

UW-Green Bay, So., Rockford, Ill.

Gregory aided the Phoenix in its win over Chicago State April 2, as the sophomore posted victories at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles in the dual victory. In singles, Gregory defeated Samantha Islas 6-3, 6-1, and matched with Jennifer Tan for an 8-0 victory in doubles play.

 

Iris Jaklin

UIC, Sr., Fischbach, Austria

Jaklin came away with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Youngstown State's Emily Thayer on Sunday at the No. 1 singles spot. The senior also teamed with Christina Oum to take an 8-5 win over Thayer and Gina Peretti in doubles action.

 

League play kicks into high gear as Men's & Women's Tennis Championship approaches

 

Horizon League action kicks into high gear as teams will play only six of 19 matches against non-League opponents this weekend in preparation for the 2006 Men's & Women's Horizon League Tennis Championships.  Butler University (men's tennis) and UIC look to defend their 2005 titles at this year's championships, scheduled for April 22-23 at North Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana.
