Thompson, Niespodzany Named Swimmers of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Cleveland State’s Berry Thompson and Milwaukee’s Heidi Niespodzany are the Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 30-Feb. 5.

Thompson, a junior from Woodmere, Ohio, had a hand in 24 Cleveland State points as the Vikings defeated UIC, 138-105. Cleveland State improved to 4-0 on the season against Horizon League opponents and finish undefeated at home. Thompson won the 100-freestyle event (44.82) and finished second in the 50-freestyle (20.70). He also was part of the victorious 400-freestyle relay team, swimming a team-best 44.85 split.

Niespodzany, a senior from Pulaski, Wis., won two individual events and was also part of a first place relay team as Milwaukee’s women’s swimming team defeated Green Bay for the first time since 2008 in front of a packed Klotsche Natatorium.

Niespodzany set a pool record with her 1:52.66 time in the 200-freestyle. She also won the 100-freestyle in 52.19 for the Panthers. She swam the opening leg on the 4x400 freestyle relay team that finished just shy of a pool record in 3:31.41.

Next up for all Horizon League swim teams are the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championship held in Brown Deer, Wis., from Feb. 22-25.
