Thompson, Sommerville Named Swimmers of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Cleveland State’s Berry Thompson and Alice Sommerville are the Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Swimmer of the Week for Nov. 14-20.

Thompson, a junior from Woodmere, Ohio, placed first in two individual events at last weekend’s TYR Invitational hosted by Northwestern. Thompson won the 50-freestyle race in 20.42, besting 37 other swimmers. On the final day of competition, the CSU junior qualified for the NCAA Championships B-cut with a time of 44.29 as he placed first out of 30 competitors. He also finished third out of 33 swimmers in the 100-butterfly (50.16). He also swam on six relay teams that finished in third place four times and fourth place twice.

Sommerville, a junior from Methven, New Zealand, took home women’s top honors after setting school records in two individual events and one relay at the TYR Invitational. She set new school records in the 50-breast stroke (28.29), placing first out of 33 swimmers, and 100-butterfly (55.17), where she won out of 50 swimmers. She also was on the 400-medley relay team that set a new school record, beating the previous mark by over two seconds. Sommerville also won the 50-butterfly (24.76), while placing second in the 100-breast stroke, third in the 50-freestyle and fourth in the 100-freestyle.

Cleveland State is back in action on Nov. 29 when it hosts the Cleveland Dual Meet Invite.
