Detroit 88, Central State 65

The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was on fire from the very start as the Titans toppled Central State, 88-65, on Monday night in UDM's season opener from Calihan Hall.

The win was the 22nd-straight home-opening victory for Detroit in a streak that dates back to 1994.

Four Titans scored in double figures led by freshman Josh McFolley's 17 points.  Senior Carlton Brundidge tallied 14 points to go with six rebounds and a team-high five assists. Senior Anton Wilson had 13 points, including four 3-pointers, with five boards and four assists and sophomore Jaleel Hogan added 10 points, six caroms, two assists, a steal and a block.

Detroit ended the game shooting 53.6 percent from the field hitting 30-of-56 shots, including 11-of-27 from behind the arc. The Titans also outrebounded the Marauders, 52-35, and forced 17 turnovers.

UDM started the game by scoring the first eight points. The red, white and blue would later lead, 11-7, at the 13:58 mark when the Titans put the game away with a 14-1 run over the next five minutes. The defense led the charge holding CSU to 0-of-6 with five turnovers as the Titans took a 25-8 lead.

The Titans would extend their lead to as many as 23 in the first half before taking a 42-23 lead at the break.

Central State (0-1) went on a 13-0 run to pull within nine, 42-33, but the Titans responded with a 19-2 spurt to take a commanding 61-35 score. UDM's highest lead was 35 points, 76-41, with over seven minutes remaining.

Freshman forward Gerald Blackshear controlled the glass tonight as he collected a game-high 10 rebounds along with three steals and a block.

As a team, Detroit posted nine steals and nine blocks. The perimeter ball movement looked terrific tonight as evidenced by Detroit's nearly 41 percent shooting from downtown.The Titans also racked up 36 bench points.
