YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Valparaiso, Milwaukee and Loyola all notched individual victories on Friday during the first day of competition at the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships inside Eastern Michigan University's Rynearson Stadium.

Valpo junior Sarah Drozdowski claimed the first title of the meet, winning the women's hammer throw with a 51.57m toss. Milwaukee sophomore Jake Goodwiler turned in a dark horse performance in winning the men's hammer throw at 52.10m.

Loyola claimed both the women's and men's 10,000m titles as senior Gina Valgoi (35:01.55) and Andrew Fenske (31:48.81) won their respective races. Valgoi's time broke the Horizon League record that had been set in 2004.

Milwaukee senior Dan Simon jumped out to an early lead in the men's decathlon. Through five events, Simon scored 3,780 points while winning the 100m dash, 400m run and long jump and taking second in the high jump.

Through four events in the women's pentathlon, Milwaukee's Shelby Schaal leads with 3,093 points and Wright State's Kylie Kopp is a close second with 2,882 points. Schaal won the 100m hurdles and tied for first with Kopp in the high jump and 200m dash.

The second day of competition begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the final events in both the decathlon and heptathlon.
