Two Horizon League Golfers Named GCAA All-America Scholars
The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) recognized two Horizon League golfers as Srixon/Cleveland All-America Scholars for the 2016-17 season. Kyle Gaines of Detroit Mercy and Jackson Juerling of IUPUI were among 260 Division I golfers to receive the honor. Detroit Mercy was previously awarded GCAA All-Academic Team distinction after recording a team grade point average (GPA) above a 3.0.
To qualify as an All American Scholar, student-athletes must be a junior or senior academically, compete in three full years at the collegiate level, and participate in 50 percent of the team’s rounds. Additionally, each Division I golfer must have a stroke average under 76.0, maintain an cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and be of high moral character in good standing with his institution to receive the accolade.
Gaines Honored As GCAA All-America Scholar
DETROIT (Courtesy DetroitTitans.com) - He ended his career as one of the top golfers in recent Titan history and today, University of Detroit Mercy 2017 graduate Kyle Gaines earned another award for his hard work off the course in All-America Scholar by the Cleveland Golf/Srixon Golf Coaches Association (GCAA).
It is the second year in a row that Gaines has received the academic distinction as he becomes just the fifth Titan in school history to earn the honor twice.
Gaines graduated with a 3.320 GPA in business as he concluded another great year out on the links. He was selected First Team All-Horizon League after registering a career-best 74.7 average, third in the Horizon League. He played in all 11 tournaments on the year and led the Titans in six of them posting seven top-20 finishes, five top-10 efforts and winning the Bulldog Florida Invitational.
He wrapped up his collegiate career fifth all-time in the Titan record book with a 75.12 average.
Juerling Named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar
INDIANAPOLIS (Courtesy of IUPUIJags.com) - IUPUI rising senior Jackson Juerling was named a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar on Wednesday (July 26) based on his academic and athletic prowess this past season. Juerling was one of just 260 Division I players to earn the award.
"It's an honor to receive this award along with the other high quality student-athletes. The term 'student-athlete' is something I take seriously. I've always held myself to high standards on the course as well as in the classroom," Juerling said. "God has blessed me with a lot of good people in my corner and at IUPUI that have helped me get here, that I cannot thank enough."
"Obviously, (I) wasn't too pleased with my performance on the course this past season, but it was good to be able to get my first collegiate victory and keep up the good grades in the classroom."
Juerling, a marketing major in the Kelley School of Business, checked all the boxes. The Indianapolis-native managed a 75.97 stroke average in 32 rounds as a junior, highlighted by a win at the Benbow Invitational on Mar. 6-7. At that event, he cleared the runner-up by five shots, carding a 1-over 143 (70-73) to top the 53-player field. He earned a pair of top-10 finishes and was the Jaguars' low man in three of his 12 tournament entries.
Academically, he's well above the 3.2 threshold for the award.
He's the first IUPUI player to be honored since Jose Pablo Segurola was awarded in 2015. He's just the third Jaguar to ever earn the award, following Segurola (2014 & 2015) and Santiago Ruiz (2014).
