Detroit 3, Bowling Green 0
The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team scored a season-high three goals and earned its third shutout of the season Sunday afternoon in a 3-0 rout of Bowling Green.

The Titans (2-4-1) tallied two goals in the first half off the head and foot of senior midfielder Alyssa Riley to take a 2-0 lead at the break. Sophomore midfielder Carley Rice then added her first collegiate goal late in the second half for Detroit.

"It was a total team effort because everyone contributed today," Detroit head coach Mike Lupenec said. "It was our second game of the weekend. I was worried about the fitness level, especially in the second half, but we were able to use the whole team. Props go to our back line today. Anytime you win a game away from home, I think as a coach you have to be happy about it. The one thing we stressed was winning battles and being more physical and I think we did that today."

The game was scoreless for much of the first half until Riley scored her second and third goals of the season in a span of one minute and 24 seconds late in the opening frame. Riley scored off a header in the box on a cross from senior defender Haley Burtraw (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) for Detroit's first goal in the 38th minute.

Riley added another goal in the 39th minute after knocking home a rebound on a shot by classmate Alyssa Lotito (Macomb, Mich. / Eisenhower).

Bowling Green increased its offensive pressure in the second half, but the Detroit defense stood tall and earned its third shutout of the season and second on the road.

Rice posted her first collegiate tally in the 80th minute scoring on a shot from the front of the box. Assists on Rice's goal were credited to sophomore Mary LeAnnais (Ferndale, Mich. / Royal Oak) and Riley, who finished the day with five points.

Freshman goalkeeper Marina Manzo (Washington Township, Mich. / Romeo) made seven saves in net for her third shutout of the season. Detroit finished with 17 shots overall for the game, including eight shots on goal. BGSU had 15 shots during the game. UDM also held the corner kick advantage, 9-2.

Cleveland State 0, Niagara 0 (2ot)
The Cleveland State women's soccer team played to their first draw of the season, earning a 0-0 tie at Niagara on Sunday afternoon.

CSU moved to 4-4-1 this season, while Niagara is now 3-1-2.

It was CSU's third shutout of the season and second straight after a 4-0 win at Canisius on Friday night.

Over the last six games, the Vikings have given up just three goals.

The Vikings had their best chance at netting the game-winner in the final seconds, but Vickie Havas' shot with 10 seconds left was saved by the Niagara goalkeeper.

Niagara held a 15-7 advantage in shots, but CSU's Sarah Wood made eight saves on the day to earn the shutout.

Havas, Amanda Sivic and Allie Sieradzki each had two shots.

Green Bay 1, Eastern Illinois 1 (2ot)
For the second-straight game the Green Bay women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw, this time finishing in a tie at Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

Eastern Illinois (0-6-1) struck first in the 24th minute to take a 1-0 lead, a score that would remain the same until the 67th minute when Green Bay tied the game up. Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) would score her team and league-leading seventh goal of the season, thanks to a pretty pass from freshman Leah Nitardy (Stillwater, Minn.) that would prove to be the final score of the game.

Hartmann has now scored in five of her team’s eight games this season after scoring only two goals the entire 2013 season. She has now tallied 14 points this season.

The assist for Nitardy gives the freshman her first collegiate point of her career, notching assist number one on the season.

The Phoenix (4-2-2) did manage to put 11 shots on goal in the contest, but could only find the back of the net once. Green Bay also took nine corner kicks to EIU’s two.

Valparaiso 0, Evansville 0 (2ot)
The Valparaiso women’s soccer team posted its fourth consecutive shutout on Sunday, as the Crusaders battled Evansville to a scoreless, double-overtime draw in action at Brown Field.

The Crusader defense, backstopped by goalkeeper Sydney Galvez-Daley (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick [Creighton]), extended its shutout streak to 436 consecutive minutes of soccer with the clean sheet on Sunday.  Galvez-Daley made three saves to preserve the shutout, including a nice stop on a 1-v-1 effort from Evansville attacker Montana Portenier in the 81st minute.

Meanwhile, Valpo totaled 14 shots on the game to the Purple Aces’ eight, but were able to get just three on goal.  The Crusaders’ best chance at scoring came early on in the first period, in the 12th minute of action.  Junior Rita Craven (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) launched a shot from outside the 18-yard box which ricocheted off the crossbar, and the rebound fell to the feet of sophomore Kat Anesini (Seattle, Wash./Ballard), whose follow-up effort was stopped by Evansville (4-3-2) goalkeeper Simone Busby.

Busby also made a leaping save on a close-range shot from Shelby Oelschlager (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Range) off a free kick into the box in the 79th minute, pushing the ball over the bar.  The two sides would tally just four combined shots in extra time as the game ended in a scoreless draw.

“We have created chances, and I’ve liked the energy and the effort – the performances are good,” said Crusader head coach John Marovich.  “That’s why we’re getting ties.  Now it’s being more effective on the final pass, the final touch – it’s a foot here, a foot there, to convert those into goals.  We just have to keep working every day in training and keep our mind right.  Today’s game is behind us now – we have to move forward and focus on Eastern Illinois, focus on getting better in the areas we can get better in.”

#18 Auburn 2, Milwaukee 0
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee battled hard all match long but just couldn't find the back of the net as they fell to No. 18 Auburn at AU Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.

UWM (2-6) dominated the first half and outshot the Tigers 6-1 in the opening frame, but a pair of second-half goals doomed the Panthers and gave Auburn (6-2) the win.

Milwaukee nearly grabbed the lead in the first seconds of the game. Kelly Lewers threaded a perfect ball through the Tiger defense for Morgan LaPlant. With the keeper rushing at her, LaPlant took one touch and fired but her shot went inches wide.

The Panthers continued to push and dominate possession in the first 45 minutes.

Krissy Dorre got around the defense and had a crack from distance but the shot went just over the crossbar midway through the half.

Then, Sydney Senn used some fancy footwork to get around her defender and create some space but her left-footed shot was just saved at the near post.

Milwaukee's offense was firing on all cylinders, helped largely by the play of the UWM defense. Going up against a potent Auburn attack that already has 10 different goal scorers on the season, the Panthers completely shut down the Tigers in the first half, helped largely by the play of senior Caity Bestwina against Auburn's top forwards.

Auburn caught a lucky break to start the second half, however. Samantha Solaru winged a ball into the box that took an awkward deflection and trickled into the back of the net off a UWM defender for an own goal just two minutes into the second half.

The Panthers refused to quit, though, and nearly answered right back. Slowly working the ball forward, Amy Kauffung sent a cross in from the right and Vienna Behnke was on the back end but her sliding shot banged off the post to keep UWM off the board.

With Milwaukee pushed hard for the equalizer late in the game, AU was able add a very late goal on a breakaway to give seal the game.

Paige Lincicum came up big numerous times, making four saves in facing 13 shots.

For the game, Auburn outshot Milwaukee, 13-8. AU had a 5-1 edge in corners and were whistled for 11 fouls to UWM's five.

Air Force 5, Oakland 1
The Oakland women's soccer team (1-7) dropped at 5-1 decision at Air Force (3-3) Sunday afternoon at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Golden Grizzlies recorded 13 shots with Alice Palmer scoring her fist goal of the season. Defensively, Stephanie Bukovec faced 18 shots recording a career-high seven saves in the losing effort.

"Too many costly mistakes today put the game out of our reach early," said head coach Margaret Saurin. "We had a bright start and created a couple of chances but four goals allowed in the first half was too big of a mountain to climb. We gave it everything in the second half but it was not enough to get us back in the game."

Air Force jumped out to1-0 lead six minutes in the contest capitalizing off a set piece as Angela Karamons scored on a header off a free kick. The Falcons added another tally in the 28th minute, then added two more goals within a minute of each other from Megan Schulze followed by Gabriella Gray to take a commanding 4-0 lead.

In the 79th minute of the second half, Joan Sieja sent in a shot which goalkeeper Bridget Bielski saved but could not corral the rebound. Palmer moved in and put the loose ball in the back of the net putting Oakland on the board at 4-1.

However, Air Force's Alison Skidmore scored just 30 seconds later giving the Falcons the 5-1 victory.

Southern Utah 1, Wright State 0 (2ot)
Southern Utah scored the only goal of the match with just 1:04 remaining in the second overtime as the Wright State women's soccer team wrapped up play at the Mountain Classic Sunday in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Kaitlin Parkin tallied the game-winner at the 108:56 mark on an assist from Megan Bolding.

The Thunderbirds held a 10-6 advantage in shots anf 4-2 edge in corner kick.  Junior goalkeeper Halle Pyle recorded three saves for the Raiders.

Western Michigan 3, UIC 0
The UIC women's soccer team (1-6-0) dropped a 3-0 decision at Western Michigan (5-1-0) on Sunday afternoon. Goalkeeper Kelly Fritz saved a season-high 11 in the loss, while raising her season total to 34.
Western Michigan has proven itself defensively strong this season by shutting out each of their opponents with the exception of Michigan State, their only loss so far this season. The Broncos held the Flames to just two shots Sunday afternoon, with none reaching goal.

Junior Flo Beshiri and sophomore Mackenzie Fuller provided the two shots for UIC, who unfortunately could not capitalize offensively. Western Michigan compiled 23 shots on the afternoon, with 11 reaching goal.

The scoring began near the end of the first half at the 40:56 mark on a header off of Western Michigan junior Lindsey Lee as senior Diana Dedvukaj provided the assist. Senior Rachel Chaney scored her second goal of the season at the 70:13 mark with sophomore Olivia Vollmers taking the assist while sophomore Liz Abro kicked in the final goal for the Broncos at the 86:47 mark with sophomore Mackenzie Barber earning the helper.
