Women's Tennis

University of Illinois at Chicago and Butler University will meet in the 2006 Women's Tennis Championship match, after posting wins in the semifinals over Wright State University and Youngstown State University respectively.  The Flames, searching for their tenth consecutive title, handed the Raiders a 4-0 defeat, taking three singles spots in straight sets and claiming the doubles point.  The Bulldogs battled Youngstown State, taking a 4-3 victory from the Penguins.  The Raiders and Penguins will meet in the third-place match.

Cleveland State and Detroit will meet in the women's fifth-place game, scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday morning.  CSU defeated UW-Milwaukee, 4-0, behind a No. 1 singles win from First Team All-League selection Sarah Galon, while Detroit handed UW-Green Bay a 4-2 defeat.

Wright State University won the final women's quarterfinal match of the morning, defeating Cleveland State University, 4-3, in a marathon match lasting near four hours.  Christa Ames fought back after being down one set to defeat Lindsay Sellers at No. 4 doubles, while Audra Beckett, Laura Culbertson and Karina Presti also notched singles wins for the Raiders.

Butler University looks to repeat as Horizon League Men's Tennis Champions after defeating Cleveland State in Saturday's semifinal match. The Bulldogs entered the championship as the No. 1 seed and have claimed the title in each of the last four years.

The Flames defeated UW-Green Bay in the second semifinal, using strong performances from Ivan Kovalev at No. 1 singles and Adriano Liccardo at No. 3 singles to defeat to the Phoenix, 4-0. Horizon League player of the Year Tim Prudlow did not play for UW-Green Bay due to illness.

The men started the day with two 4-1 matches, as Cleveland State defeated Wright State and UW-Green Bay overpowered Youngstown State.   The Vikings swept the doubles collected wins at the bottom three singles spots to advance to the semifinals, while Mark Goldin, Scott Dickert and Eric Hines all claimed singles victories in the Phoenix win over YSU.
