INDIANAPOLIS - UIC juniors Luis Gonzaga and Ilinca Cristescu have been named Horizon League Tennis Players of the Week for the period of Feb. 15-21.
Gonzaga, a native of Sorocaba, Brazil, helped UIC go 3-0 over the weekend. He posted wins at No. 3 singles against Bradley (6-2, 6-3), Villanova (6-3, 6-3), and UMKC (3-6, 7-6 (4), 12-10). Gonzaga also paired with Bastian Harbo at No. 1 doubles to register an 8-3 win at Bradley and 8-2 victory at Villanova.
Cristescu, a native of Bensenville, Ill., helped UIC go 2-0 over the weekend. Playing at No. 2 singles, she recorded a 7-5, 6-2 victory at Toledo on Saturday and 7-5, 6-0 win against Bowling Green on Sunday. Cristescu also teamed with Amy Jellish to record a 9-5 win at Toledo, and 8-6 triumph over Bowling Green at No. 3 doubles.
The UIC men are back in action on Friday at Southern Illinois, while the UIC women are idle until March 3 when they travel to El Paso, Texas, for the UTEP Quad.
