CHICAGO, Ill. -- UIC Athletics Hall of Famer Curtis Granderson was selected to the American League All-Star Team for the 80th annual Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on July 14.

Granderson and Detroit Tiger teammates Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson were picked to represent Motown's major league club at the 2009 Midsummer Classic via player balloting conducted last week.

Granderson, who played baseball at UIC from 2000-2002, will become the first Flames player to ever appear in an MLB All-Star Game.

He entered Sunday tied for the Tigers' team lead and 10th in the American League with 18 home runs. Granderson also has a .255 batting average and 43 RBI.

Only Torii Hunter among AL center fielders has more putouts without an error this year than Granderson's 189.
