OMAHA, Neb. – The UIC men’s soccer team (3-2-1) was unable to fend off No. 3 Creighton (5-0-1) on Tuesday night as it dropped a 3-1 decision at Morrison Stadium. Freshman Jose Fuentes scored the lone goal for the Flames and the first of his career in the 75th minute.
The Bluejays fired off 13 shots in the match with five reaching on goal and held UIC to five attempts. Fuentes took three of the Flames’ shots, while senior Jesus Torres registered a shot on goal.
Creighton came out with an early lead in the ninth minute after Fabian Herbers scored his fourth goal of the season on a cross from Ricardo Perez. The Flames were held to two shots in the first 45 minutes of play, with redshirt-junior Piotr Lagowski's attempt going wide and Torres’ shot being saved by the Bluejays’ goalkeeper Connor Sparrow.
In the 58th minute, Creighton increased its lead to 2-0 when Timo Pitter scored his third of the season off a pass from Vincent Keller.
After having a shot go wide early in the second half, Fuentes scored UIC’s lone goal in the 75th minute to bring the Flames within one, but the Bluejays answered back with Ricky Lopez-Espin’s third goal of the season in the 84th minute with the assist from Fernand Castellanos. Fuentes took UIC’s final shot in the 88th minute, but it went wide.
Sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Putna made two saves in the match while allowing three goals to move his goals-against average to 0.94 this season.
The Flames return home to host DePaul at Flames Field on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT. The men’s soccer program will hold an event prior to the match to honor its alumni and celebrate its 60th anniversary.
