Chicago, Ill. - The UIC Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) lent a hand in the community last week while also spending time educating their own group on the dangers of hazing via a Life Skills seminar featuring guest speaker Hank Nuwer.

Members of the SAAC committee helped provide plenty of treats this Halloween for students at Smyth Elementary Magnet School in Chicago. All 18 of UIC's athletic programs helped raise over $450, which was used to purchase paper, pens and candy for the students.

Committee members delivered the goods on Thursday, October 27th.

On Tuesday, October 25, the SAAC group convened to learn and discuss the issue of hazing on campus. Nuwer, an author/journalist who has appeared on more TV new programs on the issue than any other expert and was a consultant on the NCAA survey of athletics hazing practices, led the forum.

The UIC student-athlete advisory committee is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and to offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses. An Association-wide SAAC was adopted by legislation approved at the 1989 NCAA Convention, and was formed primarily to review and offer student-athlete input on NCAA activities and proposed legislation that affected student-athletes.
