Valentine's Day was made even sweeter for local students at Smyth Elementary Magnet School this year as members of the University of Illinois at Chicago Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) delivered $163 dollars worth of treats to the school.

Student-athletes from several sports participated in the program, including members of the men's and women's cross country and track and field, soccer, volleyball, women's tennis and baseball teams.

UIC Athletics has worked with Smyth Elementary on various programs throughout the past year, including a Halloween drive last fall which raised $450 plus generous amounts of candy.

"The UIC SAAC group has again helped our adopted school, Smyth Elementary, enjoy a holiday on us," said Dennis Wills, Associate Athletic Director/Compliance at UIC. "We are proud of our student-athletes and the wonderful work performed in the community by them."

That continued work in the community, and with Smyth Elementary in particular, has been beneficial to both the children and the student-athletes.

"We feel privileged that we are able to contribute to the children of Smyth school," said Corey Steven, president of UIC's SAAC.

"We appreciate Smyth school for giving us the opportunity to lend a helping hand."
