Chicago - Several UIC staff members and student-athletes volunteered their time and money in helping provide donations for the Smyth Elementary School of Chicago on Wednesday, Oct. 27 as a part of their involvement through the NCAA Stay-in-Bounds program.

The Halloween event was a success as the UIC staff and student-athletes delivered candy and toothbrushes to the kids and staff at the Smyth Elementary School.

"The kids and staff at Smyth were very appreciative," said UIC Associate Athletic Director Denny Wills.

All 16 of the Flames' athletic squads contributed to the event as their $468 of donations were able to purchase 150 new toothbrushes for the students.

UIC staff members included Syvlia Furner, Sam Rush, Andrew Haring, Molly Stearns, Deb Fox, Mike Cassidy and Denny Wills. UIC Student-athletes participating in the event included baseball players Brett Schaefer, Bill Behnke and Scott Saling.

The NCAA Stay-in-Bounds program was formed to build good character, and foster responsible behavior and cooperation among the community's youth. Local scholastic, community, and faith-based youth development organizations collaborate with collegiate, Olympic and professional organizations to attain these goals by using participation in sports as a vehicle.
