Detroit 68, UW-Green Bay 56


GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Brandon Cotton scored 18 points and Detroit kept alive its hopes for third place in the Horizon League with a 68-56 victory over UW-Green Bay Wednesday night.


Detroit moved above .500 in league play at 8-7 (11-15 overall) and can clinch the third seed and a first-round bye for the Horizon League tournament with a win over Youngstown State on Saturday.


James Thues added 14 points and Ryvon Covile 10 for Detroit, which outscored Green Bay 18-5 over a nine-minute stretch in the second half after the Phoenix had pulled within two points.


The run gave the Titans a 53-38 lead with six minutes left, and Green Bay didn't get any closer than eight points the rest of the way.


Benito Flores and Brandon Morris scored 17 points each to lead Green Bay, while Javier Mendiburu 16 points. The Phoenix shot just 35 percent from the field.


Green Bay (17-9, 10-5), which was already locked into the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament, lost for the third time in its last four games.


After an 11-0 Detroit run put the Titans ahead 31-17, Green Bay closed the first half with seven straight points. Flores then opened the second half with a 3-pointer, and Green Bay eventually pulled within 35-33 before Detroit took control for good.

UIC 81, Wright State 68


CHICAGO (AP) -- Cedrick Banks scored a game-high 39 points to lead UIC to an 81-68 victory over Wright State in a Horizon League game Wednesday night.


The Flames (14-12, 8-7 Horizon League) took a 40-33 lead into halftime before a home crowd of 4,369 at Chicago's UIC Pavilion. The lead changed seven times and was tied eight times in a game that UIC held on to win.


Sloppy play by the Raiders (13-14, 7-8) allowed the Flames to score 19 points off turnovers. Wright State scored just 9 points after UIC turned over the ball.


The only other player to score in double digits for the Flames was Karl White, who added 14 points in a game otherwise dominated by Banks. Armond Williams grabbed 12 rebounds for the Flames.


Wright State had three players in double digits. DaShaun Wood scored 19, Drew Burleson had 18 and Everett Spencer added 10 for the Raiders.

Loyola 67, Cleveland State 63


CLEVELAND (AP) -- Blake Schilb had 27 points and eight rebounds to lead Loyola to a 67-63 victory over Cleveland State on Wednesday.


Schilb made 9 of 15 shots, including 5 of 7 3-pointers, for the Ramblers (11-16, 8-8 Horizon League). DaJuan Gouard added 11 points.


The two teams were tied at 51 before Loyola pulled away. Gouard made four free throws and hit a layup as the Ramblers built a 66-59 lead with 36 seconds left.


Raheem Moss scored 18 points and Patrick Tatham finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Vikings (9-15, 6-9), who have lost four straight games.


Cleveland State opened the game with a 9-2 run but Anthony Smith made a layup late in the first half to give the Ramblers a 31-29 lead at halftime.

Butler 79, Youngstown State 59


YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) -- Brandon Polk scored 24 points to lead Butler to a 79-59 win over Youngstown State on Wednesday.


Bruce Horan scored 13 points, and Avery Sheets and Jamie Smalligan added 12 each for the Bulldogs (12-14, 6-9 Horizon League), who led by as many as 25 points. Sheets also had seven assists.


The Penguins (5-21, 2-13) trailed 44-32 at halftime, and opened the second half with a 3-pointer by Quin Humphrey to trim the lead to nine. But Butler responded with a 15-4 run over the next six minutes to make it 59-39 with 13:45 to play.


Butler shot 59.2 percent from the field, and held Youngstown State to 46.8 percent shooting.


Brian Radakovich led Youngstown State with 14 points, and Humphrey added 11. Khari McQueen and Derrick Harris added 10 each.
