INDIANAPOLIS -- UIC seniors Joey Begel and Kara Komp have been named the Horizon League's Scholar-Athletes of the Month for March.
Begel dominated on the mound for the Flames, posting a 1.17 ERA (four earned runs in 30.2 innings pitched) in six appearances. Opponents batted just .165 against Begel, who recorded 18 strikeouts.
Off the field, the senior carries a 3.44 cumulative GPA in UIC's business marketing program. He earned a flawless 4.0 GPA during the fall semester and is on schedule to graduate this May.
Komp batted .407 during the month of March, racking up 22 hits and scoring 11 runs. The senior added a .426 slugging percentage and .429 on-base percentage.
In the classroom, Komp is a member of the Dean's List and carries a 3.83 cumulative GPA while majoring in urban planning. She is enrolled in UIC's Honors College and is on track to graduate in May.
