UIC's Bubonja Named Men's Soccer Player of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - University of Illinois at Chicago junior goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja has been named Horizon League Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the period of Sept. 15-21. The award is the first of his career.

Bubonja (pronounced Bu-BONE-ya), a Belgrade, Serbia, native, led host UIC to a 1-0-1 record at the Chicago Classic over the weekend. The junior opened the weekend by posting a shutout in a 2-0 win over Princeton Friday night. Bubonja made four saves in the victory.

On Sunday, Bubonja stopped three shots in a scoreless tie against Loyola Marymount. The blanking of the Lions was his third shutout of the season. With the stalemate, the Flames joined national powerhouses Saint Louis and New Mexico on the list of teams that have played LMU to a tie this season.

For the week, Bubonja totaled 200 minutes of scoreless goalkeeping with seven saves.

Bubonja currently stands fourth in the Horizon League with a 0.81 goals-against average. He is also fourth in the league in save percentage (.793) and saves per game (3.29).

Bubonja is the second Flames standout to claim Horizon League Player of the Week honors this season, joining junior midfielder Baggio Husidic, who won the award on Sept. 1.

Horizon League play begins this week for all nine teams. Bubonja and UIC will host Cleveland State Friday at 8 p.m. ET before closing the weekend at home against Detroit Sunday at 5 p.m.
