INDIANAPOLIS - Basketball standout Jeremy Buttell of UIC and sprinter Nicole Noelliste of Loyola have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Month for January.
Buttell (Colleyville, Texas/Heritage), a senior forward, averaged a team-leading 15.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game during January. He highlighted the month with a career-high 31 points against Youngstown State on Jan. 7 and had 22 versus Youngstown State Jan. 9.
In the classroom, Buttell carries a 4.0 grade-point average as a business major.
Noelliste (Littleton, Colo./Immaculate Conception), a junior, broke an 18-year-old Loyola record in the 200 meters with a time of 25.23 at the Illinois Carle/Health Alliance Classic Jan. 23.
An environmental studies major, Noelliste (pronounced no-ell-EEST) owns a 3.83 grade-point average and has been named to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll. She was also selected to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team in 2009 and helped Loyola earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Team recognition.
The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semesters or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the month's competition. Winners are selected by the League's faculty athletics representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
