INDIANAPOLIS --- University of Illinois at Chicago senior outfielder Sarah Clynes has been named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week, while Cleveland State University junior righthander Amanda Macenko has earned Pitcher-of-the-Week accolades for the week ending April 12, the League office announced Monday (April 13).

Clynes batted a League-best .625 (10-for-16) last week with eight runs scored and five runs-batted-in for UIC, which went 5-0 on the week, including 3-0 in conference play. She had four doubles, a triple and a home run in game one of a doubleheader against the University of Detroit Mercy on April 11, Clynes went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. The League award is the sixth of her career, including two as Player of the Week and four as Pitcher of the Week.

Macenko went 4-1 with a 0.82 earned-run average in five outings last week against Horizon League opponents, tossing 34 innings with 41 strikeouts and only five walks. She earned both wins in a doubleheader against Detroit April 9 as she struck out 22 and allowed one run in 11 innings. In a three-game series against Loyola University Chicago, Macenko lost the opener 3-2 before bouncing back with complete-game wins in the second (5-2) and third (2-1) games. With four wins last week, she broke the school record of 67 set by Amy Kyler (1993-97) and now has 70 for her career. The League honor is Macenko's 10th of her career and third in the last four weeks.



Comprised of 10 public and private institutions of higher learning, the Horizon League is an NCAA Division I athletics conference that sponsors 19 intercollegiate championships and is headquartered in Indianapolis. The League and its member institutions aspire to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility.



Horizon League teams have enjoyed national success in a variety of sports in recent years, most notably in men's basketball, in which its teams have advanced to the Regional semi-finals of the NCAA Championship three times in the past seven seasons.
