INDIANAPOLIS -- UIC sophomore Maurizio Feoli (San Jose, Costa Rica/Pan-American) has been named the Horizon League Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, for the week of Jan. 14-20. The accolade is the first of Feoli’s career.
Feoli led UIC (1-2) to its first win of the season, a 7-0 sweep of visiting Chicago State on Saturday, Jan. 19. The previous day, Feoli helped the Flames secure one of two singles points in a 5-2 loss at Western Michigan.
Opening the weekend at No. 6 singles, Feoli found himself down a set before rallying for the win. The sophomore took the second set, 7-6, winning the tie-break 8-6 to knot the match. In the third set, Feoli won a break to take the match, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
Feoli started his match at No. 2 doubles with Christopher Cole, where the pair won, 8-6, helping secure the doubles point for UIC. In singles, Feoli moved up to No. 5, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. On the year, Feoli is 3-0 in singles play.
UIC will head up I-94 on Saturday, Jan. 26, meeting Marquette at 4 p.m. EST.
