TOWSON, Md. -- Coryn Schmit (Hawthorn Hills, Ill./Lake Zurich) of the UIC softball team is one of only four infielders from 279 Division I softball programs in the nation to be honored as a Capital One Academic All-American, it was announced by CoSIDA Thursday morning. She was a first team selection this year after winning third team honors a year ago.

“We are so proud of Coryn for all she has done both on and off the field for this program,” head softball coach Michelle Venturella said. “This is a tremendous honor and she is extremely deserving of it.”

The first baseman is the ninth Academic All-American in UIC history, including being named a third team selection in 2012. She is just the second first team selection in Flames’ history, joining Cameron Astiazaran (softball) in 2005.

A member of the UIC softball team from 2010-2013, Schmit has compiled a lengthy resume, beginning with her flawless 4.0 grade-point average in kinesiology and being a member of the Honors College. In addition to her third team Academic All-American status in 2012, she has been a first team Academic All-District Five honoree in 2012 and 2013.  She is a three-time (2011,12,13) UIC Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She was awarded for being the kinesiology student-athlete with the highest GPA in 2012, she is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Honors and the Golden Key International Honors Society.

During her career on the softball team, she was named to the Horizon League all-Newcomer team as a freshman in 2010, before being selected to the first team all-Horizon League and all-tournament team as a sophomore. During her sophomore season, she led the team in home runs with 10, she was the March Scholar-Athlete of the Month and she was named the Horizon League Player of the Week on April 4, 2011. During her senior season, she was a Horizon League pre-season team honoree and was a second team all-Horizon League selection.

Schmit will begin graduate school at UIC for physical therapy during the fall of 2013.
