INDIANAPOLIS –UIC sophomore Laura Swan (Glendora, Calif.) is the Horizon League softball Player of the Week, while Youngstown State senior Casey Crozier (Valparaiso, Ind.) is the Horizon League softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 10-16. This is the second League honor for Crozier on the year and first for Swan.

The UIC softball team competed at the Hoosier Classic over the weekend in Bloomington, Ind. On Friday, the squad split the day with a 4-3 victory over Toledo before falling to Indiana 4-1. The next day, the Flames beat two Big Ten opponents defeating Michigan State 4-3 and Indiana 10-9.

Swan was solid at the plate for UIC at the Classic going 8-for-13 overall to tab a .615 batting average. In her eight hits, she drove-in two runs, posted a .846 slugging percentage, a .571 on-base percentage and hit three doubles. In her three multi-hit games, she went 3-for-4 against Toledo and Indiana (game 2) and went a perfect 2-for-2 versus Michigan State.

Youngstown State competed on the East Coast with games in Wilmington, N.C. and Baltimore, MD. The team went 5-2 over the week collecting wins against UNCW, UMass-Lowell, Mount St. Mary’s and Coppin State.

Crozier became the Penguins all-time wins leader with 47 after throwing a two-hitter against Coppin State with seven strikeouts in the final game of the trip. Against UNCW, she posted a three-hit shutout to tie the wins record and fanned nine batters in her start versus UMass-Lowell. Over the course of Crozier’s three starts and 17.1 innings in the circle, she collected two wins, had an earned run average of 1.21, held batters to a .172 batting against average and tallied 19 K’s.

UIC travels to Cleveland, Ohio to face the Vikings in a three-game series starting Saturday, March 22. The road trip will begin conference action for the Flames. Youngstown State hosts a double-header with Eastern Michigan Tuesday, March 18 and faces Niagara the following day for another double-header matchup. The Penguins then host Valparaiso over the weekend for a three-game series to kick off Horizon League play this season.
