Day One Results

Brown Deer, Wis. - The first day of the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships opened with an electrifying start Wednesday in Brown Deer, Wis.

 

On the women's side, UW-Green Bay currently sits in first with 115 points, while UW-Milwaukee sits in second place with 107. Wright State (100), UIC (77), Cleveland State (69), Youngstown State (65) and Butler (68) round out the rest of the field.

 

The Phoenix swam to victories in the 200-yard freestyle and medley relays. In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Abby Mayer, Laura Brager, Kate Riebe and Kristin Carlson paced the field with a time of 1:35.81, narrowly beating out second-place UIC (1:35.88). In the 200 medley relay event, Mayer, Riebe, Allison Kreb and Sarah Ciganek swam away with the victory in impressive fashion with a time of 1:44.75, nearly two seconds ahead of the second-place team from Wright State who touched the wall in 1:46.43.

 

In the 1000-yard freestyle event, Wright State's Catalina Martinez won the title as she swam away from the field with a time of 10:16.60, beating out second-place Molly Cox (10:26.11) of UW-Green Bay and Raider teammate Kristi Fox (10:28.73).

 

In the three-meter diving preliminaries, Erin Blemberg of UW-Milwaukee took the top spot with a score of 402.25, followed by teammate Crystal Szymanski (389.05) and UIC's Tara Goodwin (382.15).

 

On the men's side, Wright State jumped out to an early lead with 131 points, while Cleveland State is the only other team to break the century mark on the first day as the Vikings sit in second place with a score of 102. UW-Green Bay (82), UW-Milwaukee (77), UIC (75) and Butler (68) fill out the rest of the field after day one.

 

Day one was highlighted by record-breaking performances in the 200-yard freestyle and medley relays. In the 200 freestyle relay, UIC's team of LeRoy Stevens, Bill Hare, Sakis Lamprou and Blake Booher broke the Horizon League record in a sizzling time of 1:20.80, beating the old record of 1:21.76, set last season by Wright State.

 

In the 200 medley relay, Wright State's Bobby McRae, Rafael Candido, Elvis Cirikovic and Dejan Antolic set a new League mark with a time of 1:31.23, edging out second place UIC, which finished with a time of 1:31.88. The old record of 1:31.41 was set by Wright State in 1999.

 

In the 1000-yard freestyle event, Wright State's Scott Lang swam to the title in a time of 9:22.92, beating out second-place Bjorn Schantz (9:32.12) of Cleveland State and Butler's Raj Duggal (9:35.21).

 

In the one-meter diving preliminaries, Cleveland State's Thatcher Carr grabbed the top spot with a score of 376.25, followed by UW-Milwaukee's Jeff Jasinowski (290.95) and UW-Green Bay's Phil Zumstein (256.25).

 

The Horizon League Championships continue on Thursday, with preliminary heats beginning at 10:30 a.m. CT, followed by the women's three-meter diving finals.  The men's one-meter diving finals will take place at 3:30 p.m. while the swimming finals will occur at 6:30 p.m.
