INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Wisconsin-Green Bay senior Stephanie Gross (women's soccer) and Butler University junior Kent Wories (men's cross country) have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Sept. 12).

Gross scored all three Phoenix goals last weekend, leading UW-Green Bay to a victory and a tie. She hit the net twice in a 2-2 draw with Northern Illinois University on Friday, and hit the net from 40 yards away for the only scoring in Sunday's 1-0 victory over Western Illinois University. That strike was the eighth match-winner of her career, and put her into fourth place in school history with 24 career goals to her credit.

In the classroom, Gross owns a 3.835 grade-point average as a double major in human development and psychology. She received First-Team Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as well as First-Team Scholar All-Region recognition from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America last fall.

Wories became the first two-time League honoree, adding the latest award to the certificate he earned last week (Sept. 5). The accolade follows his seventh-place finish among 45 runners at the Indiana University Open on Saturday. His 26:22 timing was 21 seconds behind champion and former state titlist Justin Roeder, making Wories one of only two non-Big Ten Conference runners in the top 12.

Wories' academic achievements include a 3.965 grade-point average as a finance major. He was a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll in each semester last year.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
