INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Wisconsin-Green Bay sophomore Mike Schachtner (men's basketball) and Loyola University Chicago senior Jenna Real (women's basketball) have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Jan. 9).

Schachtner scored 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field as UW-Green Bay rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to defeat Cleveland State University on Saturday (Jan. 6). It was the second time Schachtner has scored 30 or more points in a game this season, making him the first Phoenix player to achieve that feat since Jeff Nordgaard in 1995-96. For the week, Schachtner averaged 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two contests.

Schachtner leads the League as a 51-percent shooter from three-point range, while his .500 field-goal clip is fifth-best on that chart. Academically, the Phoenix sharpshooter owns a 3.90 grade-point average as a general studies major. This is the second weekly honor for Schachtner, who also earned Scholar-Athlete accolades on Dec. 19.

Real joins a list of three-time winners, adding this week's honor to her certificates from Dec. 12 and Dec. 27. The latest award recognized her averages of 23 points and 6.5 rebounds in two contests last week, helping the Ramblers to a 1-1 record. Real, who shot 72 percent (18-for-25) from the floor in the two games, collected 25 points and eight caroms to lead Loyola past Youngstown State University on Thursday (Jan. 4) and added 21 points with five boards versus Cleveland State on Saturday.

In the classroom, Real owns a 3.56 grade-point average in her studies as a fine arts major. She is a four-time member of the League's Academic Honor Roll.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
