INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Wisconsin-Green Bay junior Betty Slinger (volleyball) and Cleveland State University senior Bjorn Schantz (swimming and diving) have been named the Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Oct. 24).

Slinger posted triple-doubles in both her team's matches last week, giving her a nation-leading total of seven this year. Five of those efforts have come in her last seven appearances, including 13 kills, 21 assists and 16 digs in a three-game sweep at Youngstown State University on Friday (Oct. 20) plus 12 kills, 23 set-ups and 12 digs versus Cleveland State on Saturday (Oct. 21). For the season, Slinger is averaging 2.16 kills, 9.05 assists and 2.65 digs per game.

In the classroom, Slinger owns a 3.877 grade-point average as a human biology major. She earned Academic All-League honors in 2005, and has been a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll in each of the last two years.

Schantz won the 500 and 1000 freestyle events in Saturday's season-opening dual meet versus Valparaiso University. Schantz's times of 4:42.45 and 9:40.57 each earned nine points in CSU's 133-76 victory over the Crusaders.

The Viking senior was the League's Athlete of the Year in 2005-06 as well as the Swimmer of the Meet after helping CSU to the 2006 League Championship---the school's first title in any sport since 1999. In the classroom, he carries a 3.83 grade-point average as an international business/marketing major, earning Dean's List honors on several occasions as well as CSU's Athletic Academic Award in 2005. He also was a member of the Academic All-League Team in 2006.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
