Milwaukee, Wis. - Sandy Botham, head women's basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will be honored by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches' Association this weekend as its Division I State Coach of the Year.

She will receive the award Saturday at the WBCA's Hall of Fame Banquet in Middleton.

In her 10th season with the Panthers in 2006, she led the team to a school-record 22 wins, as well as the program's second Horizon League regular season and tournament titles. Milwaukee rode a school-record 12-game winning streak through the league tournament and into the NCAA Tournament for the second time ever. Botham was selected as the Horizon League Coach of the Year for the third time in her career, while the team placed two players on the all-league first team, including newcomer of the year Traci Edwards.

"It's great to be honored by the WBCA as the coach of the year," Botham said. "This is the first time the WBCA has recognized us, so this is truly a milestone for the program. It's not just an individual award, but rather recognition for our program and the year we had last season. It reflects the direction we are headed and how far we've come."

While UWM was the lone Wisconsin Division I women's team to qualify for the NCAA Tournament last season, three teams in total made post-season appearances, including Marquette and UW-Green Bay in the WNIT. UWGB's Kevin Borseth was the 2005 recipient of the award.
