UW-Milwaukee Standouts Stanczyk and Reschke Named Summer League All-Stars

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball standouts Ben Stanczyk and Charlie Reschke have followed their solid 2004 college campaigns with impressive play this summer as both players were named Northwoods League All-Stars by the league office this weekend. Stanczyk, a pitcher and infielder, and Reschke, a second basemen, will play for the South Divisionin Wednesday's (July 14) All-Star Game after leading their La Crosse Loggers squad to a 23-14 record and first-place showing in the first half of the Northwoods season.
An all-star pick in 2003, Stanczyk has continued his Northwoods domination on the mound as he boasts a 5-2 record with a 1.77 earned run average in eight starts for the Loggers. The righthander has worked 56.0 innings and allowed just 50 hits and 10 walks while striking out 69 batters, good for second in the league. Stanczyk, the 2004 Horizon League Pitcher and Playerof the Year, was recently named the Northwoods League Player of the Night on Sunday (July 11) thanks to an eight-inning, three-hit, 10-strikeout performance in a 1-0 win over Madison. When not pitching Stanczyk has seen time as a designated hitter, third baseman, and first baseman where he boasts a .278 batting average with a home run, 11 RBI, 13 runs, and three stolen bases in 90 at-bats.
Reschke, who was leading the Northwoods League in hitting at one point this summer, is making his first All-Star appearance in his second season in the league. The lefthanded swinging infielder is batting .290 while leading the Loggers with 20 runs scored. Reschke has added four doubles, two home runs, and 12 RBI in 124 at-bats on the year.
The Northwoods League is a wood bat league and is made up of many of the top collegiate baseball players in the nation and is considered one of the top three summer leagues in America. The Northwoods League consists of ten teams, five in Minnesota, three in Wisconsin, and one each in Iowa and Canada.
In addition to the fine seasons enjoyed by Stanczyk and Reschke, two more Panther regulars have excelled this summer as sophomore Joe Nowicki and freshman Ross McCoy were recently honored as All-Stars in the Wisconsin State League. The State League is another wood bat summer league consisting of ten teams throughout the state and Chicagoland area. Nowicki is currently batting .293 for the Sheboygan A's while leading the team with 17 RBI to gowith six doubles, a triple and a home run. McCoy, who joins Nowicki on the A's roster, owns a .324 batting average with two doubles, two home runs, 12 RBI and four stolen bases.
The Northwoods League All-Star game will begin at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday in Wausau, Wisconsin, home of the Wisconsin Woodchucks. Prior to the game a Home Run Derby will take place beginning at 5:00 p.m.
