GREEN BAY, Wis.--- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee defeated University of Detroit Mercy on penalty kicks Sunday to earn the title of 2005 Horizon League Women's Soccer Champions.

After two scoreless overtime periods, UW-Milwaukee won the championship with a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks. UWM freshman Bailey Briggs connected on the Panthers sixth penalty kick attempt to give the Panthers their first tournament championship since 2002.

UW-Milwaukee goalkeeper and 2005 Tournament MVP Erin Kane recorded three saves on the afternoon as she earned her League-record 12th shutout of the season. Detroit goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry recorded nine saves on the afternoon to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Other members of the All-Tournament team include: Detroit's Mary Parker, Lauren Moss, Katie Fortenberry, Nicole Gipson, UW-Milwaukee's Erin Kane, Amanda Winn, Nicole Motl and Becca Englund, Loyola University's Stephanie Pauli and Meredith Buemi of Butler University.

After the first half, UW-Milwaukee held a slight edge over the Titans, with four shots as compared to three by Detroit. 2004 Tournament MVP Mary Parker of Detroit led all players with two shots in the period. At the end of regulation, UW-Milwaukee's Nicole Motl had four shots, including three on goal, to stretch the UWM advantage to 15-7.

With the win, UW-Milwaukee earns the League's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship which will begin Nov. 11 at campus sites. The Panthers will head into the NCAA Championship with a 12-match unbeaten streak.
