UW-Milwaukee's Caldwell Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

Milwaukee, Wis. - University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee swimmer Sarah Caldwell has been named to the 2003-04 Academic All-District V University Division Women's At-Large Team, which was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). For Caldwell, this is her first time being named to the Academic All-District first team, scoring the second highest grade point average on this year's all-district squad.

For Caldwell, a biological science major, the award adds to an already stocked shelf of academic distinctions. Registering a grade point average of 3.986, she was named to the Horizon League Swimming and Diving All-Academic squad for the third time in her collegiate career. Caldwell added to the mix, having garnered UWM's Athletic Director's Award for having the highest grade point average among Milwaukee student-athletes for the third-straight year. She was also named a UWM scholar-athlete and the swimming team's scholar-athlete.

"This is a great honor, to be recognized from among all the excellent student-athletes in our district," Caldwell said. "I appreciate the recognition from the organization for all the effort and hard work I put into being a student-athlete. I feel this reflects very well on the UWM swimming and diving program as our coach (Dave Clark) is very committed to academic excellence, and always stresses the STUDENT in student-athlete. His flexibility, understanding, and cooperation helped me to be able to succeed to the degree that I have as a student-athlete."

Caldwell had a strong senior season of swimming for the Panthers, tallying eight top-three finishes through 2003-04. Showing her ability to work well with others, she combined with three of her Panther teammates to set the school's 200-yard medley relay record with a time of 1:47.95.

"Sarah's talents and work ethic allowed her be a great representative for UWM both athletically and academically," Clark said. "Her efforts here as a student-athlete were greatly appreciated by her coaches and her teammates. I know she will go on to accomplish great things in her life."

Caldwell will head off to study pharmacology at the University of Wisconsin in the fall. However, the academic awards may continue as she and all the members honored as Academic All-District will appear in CoSIDA's national ballot for the Academic All-America Women's At-Large Team, which will be announced Thursday, June 17.

As a team, the women's swimming and diving team finished the year with a grade point average of 3.089 and was named Academic All-America by the College Swim Coaches Association of America for the 30th-consecutive semester. The women finished third, overall, in the Horizon League team standings at this year's championships.
